Trip Overview

If you are seeking an upscale, high-end and full-service Bahamian destination, then the Delphi Club on Abaco is an excellent option for both anglers and non-anglers alike. Built in 2009 by Peter Mantle – who previously restored, owned and managed the famous salmon fishing lodge at Delphi in Ireland – the new Delphi Club on Abaco is truly a one-of-a-kind fishing operation for the Bahamas. From the moment one arrives at the Club, a sense of the full history of fly angling becomes apparent in every aspect of the Lodge’s richly appointed decor and artwork. The well-managed and diverse fishing program will position you in some of the most productive bonefish habitat found anywhere in the Bahamas. This is a destination where anglers and non-anglers alike may enjoy the tropical setting, but rest assured that the fishing program is paramount to Delphi’s overall philosophy.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Lodging Details
Designed to resemble an 18th century Caribbean plantation house, the Delphi Club is the perfect combination of luxury hotel and fishing lodge situated in an idyllic wilderness beach location. The Club sits atop a densely-vegetated hilltop, a location that takes full advantage of ocean breezes and stunning views of Abaco’s Rolling Harbour. Upon entering the Great Room, the is no mistaking the fact that the Delphi Club was built by people who deeply care about the rich tradition of angling, as well as the art of true relaxation in a tropical setting.

Each room is inviting and interesting. From the couches in the library to the comfortable beds in each sea-view guest room, the Club has spared no expense to ensure comfort at all times. The lodge features two primary social areas furnished with plush couches, reading lamps, Wi-Fi access, coffee tables and plenty of interesting books. A loft-style tackle shop overlooks the great room, where the dining area and the well-stocked "serve-yourself" bar are located. Adjacent to the great room is a mahogany-accented library, where you can catch a game on TV, catch up on your reading, or use the lodge computer. There is also an impressive collection of angling literature in the library. The main floor of the lodge is wrapped by an exterior deck that provides elevated views of the beach, ocean, infinity pool and the surrounding pine forests.  Dinners and breakfasts are usually served in the great room, and lunches are typically served on the deck if you are not out on the water for a full day of fishing.

Delphi offers two styles of room accommodations. There are two guest rooms on the third floor and six more on the ground floor of the main lodge. These double-occupancy rooms each feature either a large king bed or two full-sized queen beds, a desk, spacious private bathrooms with spa showers, a phone, and a private deck overlooking the beach and ocean. The upstairs rooms each offer a hot tub, a wet bar and refrigerator. The infinity pool sits just to the south of the lodge, with a huge patio and plenty of shade. To access the beach, guests follow a cascading staircase lined by Cape Cod-style beach chairs and manicured landscaping. There are lounge chairs, sea kayaks, a freshwater beach shower, and a pure white sand beach that is perfect for swimming, snorkeling,  kayaking, and beachcombing.

Food and Beverages
Each morning begins with fresh fruit and cereals served buffet-style. Cooked-to-order eggs, a choice of breakfast meats, and daily breakfast specials are also available. You will customize your next day’s fishing lunch each evening, ordering from a menu that includes a wide variety of salads, sandwiches, beverages, and snacks. If you are not fishing, lunch is served daily on the wrap-around deck overlooking the ocean.

After a day of fishing or exploring, return to the lodge to freshen up before cocktail and appetizer hour begins, around 6:00 PM. The Club’s well-stocked bar is self-service, with just about every type of beverage you can imagine, including some rare liquors from the top shelf. The Club’s extensive wine cellar might be the most comprehensive private cellar found anywhere in the Bahamas, certainly on Abaco! The lodge is happy to keep a bar tab for you during your stay.

A variety of freshly-prepared local seafood and imported meats are offered each evening for dinner. Typical seafood entrées include grouper, mahi-mahi, snapper, triggerfish, crab, tuna, wahoo, and lobster. You will find that the dinners at the Club have a subtle “traditional Irish” presentation – without the potatoes and hash. Only the freshest vegetables, seafood, and meats are offered on the evening menu, and each dish is creative and beautifully presented. While this is an informal fishing lodge setting, most guests do dress up in the evenings, a bit more than at most Bahamian lodges (It is still island casual attire, but leave your drying fishing outfits in your room!).

Typical Length of Stay
Trips and itineraries of any length can be arranged. All trips are completely customized. Call Yellow Dog for details.

Non-Angling Activities and Options.
As good as the fishing is for guests staying at the Delphi Club, life around the Club is even more amazing for non-anglers. Guests can enjoy the infinity pool, a pristine white sand beach, the Club’s comfortable Great Room, expansive deck areas, and an eclectic library that is perfectly suited for relaxing. Take a long stroll down the beach, or paddle a sea kayak into the calm and crystal-clear waters of Rolling Harbor.  Snorkeling in the waters off the main beach is an option, or explore the forests that surround the Club. For off-site activities, Marsh Harbour is located only 30 minutes from the Club, offering numerous shopping opportunities for local crafts, as well as many boating and diving options. You can also take a short boat ferry ride to the outlying islands of the Abaco Cays to explore the small colorful colonial settlements such as Hope Town and Man o’ War Cay. Treasure Cay offers one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and a championship golf course located only an hour’s drive from Delphi.

Internet / Communications.
The Club does offer free Wi-Fi for guests. Most U.S. cell phones will work throughout the area depending on your service plan. Satellite TV is also available for sporting emergencies.

FISHING

General Information
Delphi Club guides primarily focus on the vast outer area known as the "Marls of Abaco," located west of the island's mainland. Each morning at the Club, you will meet your guide just outside your room, load into a truck with a Dolphin Super Skiff in tow, and drive through pine forest to Nettie's Cut, where you will then access the flats.

The drive to the boat ramp from the lodge is around 15 to 20 minutes, and few other guides or lodges use this ramp. From there, the flats are only minutes away. The length of your morning run in the boat will depend on the tides, weather and other conditions. The guides can typically target optimal tides throughout each day due to the vast flat network that is available to them.

The outer Marls area is a massive flats system consisting of hundreds of small mangrove islands, sand spits, creeks, inland lagoons, and oceanside flats. These outer stretches of hard sand flats are ideal for stalking fish while wading. You will find larger bonefish on these outer flats, as well as the occasional permit. These are not your average, schooling, dinky permit, but larger, ocean-going fish. We do suggest speaking with our Yellow Dog staff if you really want to focus on permit, as there are specific seasons and moon phases that are optimal for stalking permit in the Bahamas.

As you move deeper into the Marls, the bottom begins to soften, making wade fishing more difficult. In these areas, large schools of bonefish inhabit the expansive inland lakes and lagoons where the wind can push the water around as much as the tides. These areas are excellent for beginner anglers seeking lots of shots at fish that see very little pressure. These areas are also important during strong winds, as the mangrove islands and pine trees offer protected “lee” fishing in areas that are out of the wind.

Anglers seeking truly large bonefish and beautiful wade fishing can also head to Cherokee Sound on the eastern aside of the island or Cross Harbour to the south. One of Delphi’s guides – Dana Lowe – is one of the few Bahamian certified female guides, and she specializes in wade fishing the Cherokee Sound area. All of the Delphi guides are long-time Abaco guides, very professional and fun to fish with.

Boats and Equipment
Guests at Delphi fish from immaculate Dolphin Super skiffs that are very well maintained by the guides, full time mechanics and lodge management. Each boat is outfitted with poling platforms, fiberglass push poles, lean bars and internal rod holders, and each is powered by a 40 HP Yamaha outboard engine. Toyota pick-up trucks transfer you to and from the boat ramps and flats each day. The Club offers guests use of Hardy rods and reels and sells flies, leaders, tippet, and a variety of other items in the small on-site fly shop.

Client Testimonials

"We enjoyed entirely relaxed but also gracious and luxurious hospitality at the brilliantly conceived Delphi Club. The delightful managers and charming staff have succeeded in combining the atmosphere of an elegant house party with superbly professional guiding on some of the most fecund flats in the Bahamas. We were sad to leave after our ten days of being spoilt."
- Ian M. (Ireland)

"Delphi Lodge-in-the-Bahamas is the ultimate. The record of catches is the best testimonial to the quality of the fishing. The guides are professional and masters of their craft. The skiffs are first class. The Lodge is five-star in all respects (location, design, comfort and cuisine) and has the friendliness of its Irish management and Bahamian staff. And of note: Lady anglers feature high in the club's angling records. See you there, tight lines!"
