Trip Overview

Located on the southern tip of Abaco Island in the laid-back fishing settlement of Sandy Point, Rickmon Bonefish Lodge sits on a beach overlooking its own picturesque flat. The Lodge founder, head guide, and owner, Ricardo Burrows, has fished the waters around Sandy Point for over 30 years, and he and his team of guides pride themselves on their bonefishing skills and local knowledge. Bonefish in this area average three to four pounds, and fish in the double-digits are found on a regular basis. Off the west coast of Abaco lies Gorda Cay and Mores Island, renowned for holding large bonefish as well as permit on beautiful, sandy-white flats. On calm days, these islands are an easy run from the lodge and well worth the trip. Rickmon is one of those rare fishing destinations that combines great food, lodging and service with terrific and very friendly guides. And yes … for all you Sandy Point devotees … you can book Patrick, Anthony, Nicholas, Paul, Derreck, and, of course, Ricardo, and stay at Rickmon Bonefish Lodge!

ACCOMMODATIONS

Lodging Details
The 11-room Lodge stands on the ocean's edge. Rooms are designed for double occupancy, however single occupancy is an option if requested. Select rooms feature private balconies that overlook the large home flats adjacent to the village. From here, guests may watch tailing fish while enjoying an evening cocktail. Wireless internet is available in the lodge's common room, and all guest rooms provide cable TV and A/C.

A very comfortable dining room and bar area (complete with a pool table) provides the backdrop for enjoying delicious Bahamian-style meals for which the Lodge is renowned. An expansive, beach-side wooden deck provides the perfect spot for barbeques and a great place to watch the sun slide below the horizon with a cold Kalik beer in hand.

Food and Beverages
Each morning, coffee service begins at 6:00 AM, with breakfast following at 7:00 AM, and the fishing day normally runs from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A hearty cooler lunch is taken aboard the boat for fishing days. After a long day on the water, you will return to the Lodge to relax on the deck. Dinner is served around 7:00 PM and presents a spread of Bahamian classics, such as conch chowder, lobster, grouper, chicken, and fresh vegetables. The Lodge features a fully-stocked bar with local beers, wine, liquors and mixers. Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks are not included, but the Lodge is happy to keep a bar tab during your stay.

Typical Length of Stay
Trips of any length are available, and the convenience of the Bahamas and flights in and out of Marsh Harbour International Airport (MHH) makes Rickmon and Abaco the perfect getaway for a week-long fishing trip or a quick weekend escape.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
Snorkeling, deep sea fishing, diving, beaching, and birdwatching are the primary non-angling activities available at Sandy Point. The white sand beaches adjacent to the Lodge are a great place to relax.

Internet / Communications
The Lodge does offer Wi-Fi for guests. Most U.S. cell phones will work on Abaco depending on your service plan.

FISHING

General Information
The flats of Abaco, most of which are easily waded, primarily consist of hard-packed, white-sand bottoms speckled with patches of turtle grass. Bonefish in the area average two to four pounds and fish in the double-digits are found on a regular basis. Off the west coast of Abaco lies Gorda Cay and Mores Island. These islands are renowned for holding large bonefish and the occasional permit on beautiful, sandy, white flats. They are recognized as two of the best places in the Bahamas to specifically target permit. On calm days, these islands are an easy run from Rickmon Lodge and well worth the trip.

Sandy Point is a secluded fishing village with no other bonefish lodges in the area. The Lodge has the closest access to the interior of Abaco and the surrounding keys. It is very rare to see boats in this area that are not from Rickmon's, and the guides work as a team, so you will most likely see no other traffic at all.

Boats and Equipment
Guides utilize high-end 16 to 18-foot skiffs complete with poling platforms, 90-100 HP Yamaha outboards, and spacious casting decks. It is recommended that anglers bring their own gear and equipment, including rods, reels, wading boots, flies and all terminal tackle.
