Trip Overview

Phillip Rolle and his experienced guide staff are among the finest guides on Andros, concentrating primarily on the expansive Joulter Cayes fishing grounds located on the northern part of the island. Lodging with North Andros Flyfishing is in a small, comfortable guest house ideally arranged for groups of four to six anglers. The three-bedroom house is clean and comfortable, designed for those who care about fishing more than high-end amenities. Most importantly, it is only a 15-minute drive from Lowe Sound, the gateway to the Joulters and the boat ramp where you will begin most days. A collection of islands and small cayes, the Joulters are famous for endless, white sand flats that are ideal for extensive wading. This is some of the finest terrain on earth for stalking tailing bonefish and Phillip’s guest house is one of the best values in the Bahamas.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Lodging Details
Accommodations are in a renovated, air-conditioned house with three bedrooms and two private baths. A tasteful living room with satellite TV and dinner is served each evening in the adjacent screened dining porch. The house sits in a quiet neighborhood located a short three-minute walk from the beach. Your hosts Phillip and Betsy Rolle live just around the corner, and this is where the meals are prepared and then delivered to the guest house. Each morning you'll awaken in the morning to the smell of fresh coffee and your customized continental breakfast will be waiting for you. Your guide will pick you up at the front door and you'll be off for your short 10-minute ride to Lowe Sound, the jumping-off point for fishing the famous Joulter's Cays.

Food and Beverages
All meals are served in the privacy of the guest house. On arrival, the chef will serve you "family style" appetizers and dinner. North Andros Fly Fishing Lodge provides delicious home-cooking with a diverse menu. After dinner you will meet your guide to discuss fishing plans for the following morning. The Lodge does not offer alcoholic beverages, but guests are welcome to bring their own. The lodge staff is happy to take guest by the liquor store on the way to the lodge. Bottled water, sodas, juices and coffee are included in the price of your package.

Typical Length of Stay
Trips of any length are available and the convenience of the Bahamas makes North Andros Fly Fishing Lodge the perfect getaway for a week-long fishing trip or a quick weekend escape.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
This is a fishing-focused destination that does not offer a great deal for the non-angler. That said, the guesthouse is a three-minute walk to a beautiful beach. There is good snorkeling and sunbathing right out the front door. You can snorkel the blue hole in Conch Sound or find a guide in Evans Town to walk you to the mysterious Evans Cave and Blue Hole, made famous by explorer Jacques Cousteau. Two bicycles are available for your use. The local taxi driver, Alan Russell, can be hired for half or full day tours of Andros Island. There are local handmade straw baskets and wood carvings to purchase in Red Bays, the only settlement on the wild west side of Andros.

Internet / Communications
The Lodge does have internet access. Some U.S. cell phones will work on Andros depending on your service plan.

FISHING

General Information
The guides at North Andros Fly Fishing are some of the best in the business, and their talents--combined with long days on the water and direct access to some of the most productive flats in the entire region--make this an incredible fishing-focused option. The guides are true professionals, run quality boats, and are fun to spend the day with. They can work with anglers of all skill levels and take pride in their instructional capabilities. It is rare to see other anglers while fishing throughout the day in North Andros, generally because of the lack of guide boats visiting this region and the overall size of the fishing grounds that the guides have to choose from. The guides in North Andros use public boat ramps to launch their skiffs, therefore you will typically see other boats only at the beginning and end of the day. Once the boats are in the water, they disperse and quickly spread out.

The expansive fishing grounds in northern Andros are home to what might be the most beautiful flats in the world. The Lodge's favorite place to fish is the Joulter Cays and the boat launch at Lowe Sound is only 15 minutes from Nicolls Town and the Lodge. The Joulters Cays flats are hard, white, and sandy-bottomed, making this area a wade-angler's paradise. At times the flats reach to the horizon and when conditions are right, it is not uncommon to be completely surrounded by schools of bonefish pushing water and tailing.

The Red Bays access is on the famed West Side of Andros and is approximately 20 minutes from the Lodge. The West Side is known for big bones, resident tarpon, and the occasional permit.

The main target species in the area are obviously bonefish, which can be found and fished year-round. The average bonefish in the area is between 3 and 4 pounds, and over the course of a multi-day trip, you can expect quality opportunities at larger bonefish in the 5 to 10-pound range. The guides of North Andros Fly Fishing Lodge know tarpon as well, and love to hunt them on the flats around the creeks and channels on the West Side and throughout the Joulters Cays. North Andros is also one of the most dependable permit areas in the entire Bahamas. Flats bordering deep water are prime permit areas during settled weather. If you really want to pursue tarpon and permit, then the late spring and summer months provide the warmer temperatures that these fish prefer. We rank this destination as one of the top economical values in the Bahamas and for fly fishing some of the most beautiful and productive flats anywhere in the world.

Boats and Equipment Required
Anglers fish from 16-foot Dolphin Super Skiffs and Mavericks, complete with poling platforms, 75-100HP Yamaha outboards, and spacious casting decks. All of the lodge boats are roomy, fast and comfortable. It is recommended that anglers bring all of their own gear and equipment, including rods, reels, wading boots, flies and all terminal tackle.

TRAVEL DETAILS

How To Get There
Most travel to Andros Island should route through Nassau International Airport (NAS) due to the frequent flights and reasonable costs. Whether flying into San Andros (Western Air), Andros Town-Fresh Creek (LeAir), there are two flights daily into every small airport on Andros. The first flight is typically early in the morning (approximately 6:30 AM) and second is usually scheduled for later in the afternoon (approximately 3:30 PM). We always suggest a buffer of at least two hours between all arriving flights and departing connecting flights while in Nassau. Charter flights from Florida to Andros can also be arranged. Contact Yellow Dog for more information.

Arrival and Departure Details / Times
The Lodge's location in Nicholls Town is one hour and fifteen minutes from Andros Town Airport (ASD), and fifteen minutes from San Andros Airport (SAQ). A cab driver will deliver you to the Lodge from either airport. This taxi transfer is included in the fishing package price (from San Andros [SAQ] only. Transfers to and from Andros Town Airport [ASD] are not included.).

Documents Required
All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport that does not expire within six (6) months of trips dates. Please be sure that your passport has at least two blank, unstamped pages remaining in back, and that it is not torn, delaminated, or damaged in any way.

Client Testimonials

”The Joulters is a mind-blowing flats system that can be fished from the boat or waded on endless flats. Phillip and Betsy were wonderful hosts that made us feel right at home. They personally gave us a tour of Nicholls Town and made our stay unforgettable. We fished with Elias and he was an excellent guide. We saw hundreds of schooling fish while wading and fishing from the boat in the Joulters. Elias was a master of poling the boat into the wind. He was also a true professional and was easy to understand and take directions from. I will definitely be going back!”
- James O. (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

"As the joke goes I have good news and bad news. The good news is that I home safely from my trip to North Andros. The bad news is also that I am home safely from my trip to N. Andros. I just did not want to leave. Ian and everyone at Yellow Dog: Thanks for all of your work to prepare for this trip. It really paid off!"
- John M.

“Philip and Betsy Rolle have, in my life, evolved from guide to life long friends. Their guiding is as good as it gets but their personalities, generosity and professionalism has put them in a class by themselves. The fishing is always good, the flats always beautiful, but it is the laughs and fun that always makes fishing with Philip so memorable.”
- Brian O'Keefe (Oregon, USA)

"We have fished extensively on guided trips both salt water and fresh for several years. Phillip is the best guide we have ever had anywhere... He worked on our casting, spotting, and, the successful catches for each of us daily were proof. He seemed to know exactly when we had had enough or when we wanted more. He always had us casting down wind to fish coming to us, and arranged our casting distances for good shots at bones (some double digit). It was a pleasure to fish with Phillip, we will return."
- Jane and Craig M. (USA)

"I want you to know we truly enjoyed the trip. We are into fishing and not gourmet meals and fine wine. The price was fair and that attracted us. The guide was the best! It means a lot to guys that are there to fish: to fish hard all day. Phillip has a great personality and has a bright future in this business. I could go on and on. We will be back!"
- Danny B.  (USA)
