Trip Overview

El Pescador Lodge, in business for over 40 years, is one of the best-run, most famous fly fishing lodges in all of Central America. Situated on Ambergris Caye (an island only 15 minutes by light aircraft from Belize City), the lodge offers world-class sight fishing for the “Big Three”: tarpon, permit and bonefish. It is the perfect destination for first-time saltwater anglers, seasoned veterans, couples and families. El Pescador Lodge was one of the original properties that we worked with here at Yellow Dog, and even today it remains one of our all-time favorite destinations.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Lodging Details
Choose between comfortable standard rooms in the 12-room, colonial-style Main Lodge, or opt for upgraded accommodations in the larger El Pescador Villas.  In November 2014, El Pescador completed a total renovation of the fourteen guest rooms in the Main Lodge and the final product is fantastic! The Lodge is now able to offer guests larger, fully-modern, well-appointed accommodations while still retaining the authentic Belizean colonial feel of the exterior of the lodge. Each fully air conditioned room has all new furniture with either two queen beds or one king bed plus a small sitting area. Each private en-suite bathroom features a double granite vanity, a private toilet area, a walk-in shower, and a Belizean hardwood closet and drawers with a small refrigerator and coffeemaker. All rooms in the Main Lodge remain beachfront with great views of the Caribbean.

For guests who would like more space or are interested in more private accommodations, El Pescador also offers packages in one, two, and three-bedroom Villas. These Villas are perfect for couples, families, or small groups. Each Villa includes a large "great room" with a full kitchen, living room and dining room as well as spacious decks and access to the Villa pools. All rooms in the Main Lodge and all Villas are oceanfront with views of the Caribbean Sea and Belize Barrier Reef. You may enjoy an entire Villa as a home-away-from-home, or request portions of a Villa since each suite can be locked-off into a private unit.

Food and Beverages
The restaurant and dining room at El Pescador specializes in fresh, local Caribbean cuisine with meals served on the outdoor deck or in the main dining room. Breakfasts are made to order, and lunch each day is ordered off of a menu and packed in a cooler for your day on the water. Each evening, everyone dines together in the main dining room, where guests enjoy an expansive dinner buffet. All local liquors, beer, soda and mixers are included in the cost of your overall El Pescador trip package.

Typical Length of Stay
El Pescador requests a three (3) night minimum stay. A package of any number of nights and guided fishing days can be arranged, and guests can arrive and depart on any day of the week.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
Activities include PADI-certified diving, naturalist excursions, snorkeling, tours of Mayan ruins, beach combing, trips to the town of San Pedro, bicycling, and more. Amenities at the lodge include three swimming pools, a large indoor/outdoor bar area, complimentary Wi-Fi, satellite TV, bicycles, sea kayaks, volleyball court, and access to area dive and snorkel programs - some of the best in all of Belize! The Lodge can also organize golf cart rentals for trips around the island or a run into town.

Internet/Communications
Wi-Fi is available free of charge for guests. Please bring your own laptop or PDA to access the internet. Depending on your service plan, some cell phones will also work at the lodge and on Ambergris.

FISHING

General Information
While staying at El Pescador, numerous fishing options are available. You can fish for bones along the many tidal flats and mangroves, or fish the Barrier Reef for larger species. Target large permit on deep water flats or chase schools of smaller permit that cruise between many of the mangrove islands. Perhaps the most popular fishing at El Pescador, however, is the sight fishing for tarpon.

Offering the largest “classic” tarpon flats in the world outside of South Florida, Ambergris is one of the few spots in the Caribbean where tarpon can be sight fished year-round. Resident schools of tarpon (20 to 80 pounds) roam the broad flats of the area 12 months a year, and larger migratory tarpon – fish in the 100 to 200 pound range – arrive in strong numbers in the late spring and early summer months. It is also possible to find other species, snook in the mangroves, large jacks cruising the flats, snapper and cuda. While the tarpon and permit fishing in this part of Belize is almost always done from the boat, there are some places where an angler can wade hard-bottomed flats while stalking schools of bonefish.

Boats and Equipment
Guides fish from 23-foot Mexican super pangas, outfitted with large and spacious casting decks and poling platforms for the guides. The lodge also offers top-of-the-line loaner gear and equipment, which is included in the cost of the overall package. There is a fully-stocked fly shop at the lodge where you can purchase flies, leaders, tippet and other items.

Client Testimonials

"My wife, who, up to this point was a "non-angling spouse", went out with Kechu. He helped her catch her first bonefish and then four more. She had a great time and is no longer a "non-angling spouse". This was an excellent experience and I would happily recommend Yellow Dog and El Pescador to any that inquire."
- Michael M. (Stockton, CA)

“We worked with the Yellow Dog team of Cam, Brenda and Kimberly on our recent trip to Belize, and honestly I cannot say enough about this team! They provided exceptional customer service, answered all of my questions, followed up on emails in a timely manner, and prepared our trip to cover every detail. As this was our first saltwater fly fishing experience, we could not have asked for a better trip! Cam, selected a wonderful location when he recommended El Pescador Lodge, and we very much enjoyed the accommodations, food, fishing, and the hospitality of the staff and guides. El Pescador is a first-rate lodge for sure. Kimberly and Brenda from Yellow Dog did an outstanding job of organizing everything for us - from taking care of the airline itineraries, arranging trip insurance, sending along all pre-trip planning information, and providing detailed checklists (which, by the way, I wore out from going through the documents so many times!) I felt like every time I called the Yellow Dog team they truly cared about our trip and always went out of their way to provide detailed information and make sure that everything was covered.”
- Sam S. (Boise, ID)

"I have fly fished my entire life, but this was my first trip to the salt. It was everything I could have imagined. We not only saw a lot of tarpon, permit, and bones, but we also had countless shots at each. Perfect place for a first timer. Thanks for everything!"
- Cody and Meghan D. (Black Hawk, CO)

“Wow, what a great trip! Our group had such a fabulous time. I can only hope that we didn't wear out our welcome! We very much enjoyed the friendly staff of El Pescador. I have to say Leo, the bartender, was probably the most popular guy at the resort. A few highlights off the top of my head: Julie inaugurated the new bar by dancing on it and then of course others followed suit. Caroline had such trouble with her casting that Gilberto had a good laugh and then took them to his home to get spinning rods to fish for Barracuda. Saturday night we went to Elvie's Restaurant in town and Cory entertained us and others by blowing flaming 151 shots in the air (We were a bit worried about their palapa roof.). And we all have a new favorite drink - A Panty Ripper (Belize coconut rum and pineapple juice)! The fishing was great and I got to know both Sinoe and Gilberto well. Not only are they super guides, but terrific people as well. We really had fun! Thank you Jim and the Yellow Dog gang for all of your hard work in organizing our group. We’re already looking forward to the next time. Thank you again!”
