Yellow Dog has been hosting an annual saltwater family trip for nine consecutive summers. It is always a wonderful experience, fun for all ages, and the destination is well-suited for anglers and non-anglers alike. For the past three years, we have been traveling to Belize and El Pescador Lodge on Ambergris Caye, Belize.
This setting is ideal for this seeking a laid back, comfortable vacation with excellent fishing opportunities for anglers of all ages. Whether you are hunting elusive bonefish, permit and tarpon on the flats, or fishing the reef for pure numbers of fish, this location is ideal for novice and experienced anglers. When not fishing guests participate in a wide range of activities, including snorkeling, diving, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, visiting Mayan ruins, cave tubing, shopping, and family fun at the lodge pools. Renting golf carts and visiting “secret beach” or enjoying freshly made ice cream is always popular with the kids. The lodge and community always welcome our families with open arms and takes fine care of us.
This past June 15-22 six families enjoyed lots of sun, but also some strong winds. This made the flats fishing tough, but we did manage a few tarpon, lots of bonefish and three permit over the course of the week. One of the fathers had a trip Super Slam, which include a bonefish, tarpon, permit, and snook.
The highlight of the trip was the nighttime fishing off the lodge dock for the kids. A few nice bonefish were caught off the pier, but the most memorable fish was when one of the girls landed a permit just after dinner. The families enjoyed daily excursions into San Pedro for shopping and ice cream, as well as to Secret Beach. With many repeat families each year, the parents and children all have grown to be close friends. Seeing all the guests “unplug” and enjoy the pristine beauty of Belize makes the Yellow Dog family trips rewarding on all levels.
