Faraway Cayes: Close to Perfect Unpressured Permit and Bonefish

What: The adventuresome operation at Fly Fish Guanaja brings us The Faraway Cayes. This new and extremely remote location lies 160 miles southeast of Guanaja. These isolated cayes, for years its location known mostly by a family of longtime guides, lobster fisherman, and Miskito Indians, were kept a secret from inquisitive anglers. Until now.

When:

March 14 – 21, 2020. 5 spots

April 25 –May 2, 2020. 3 spots

May 2 – 9, 2020. 5 spots

May 16 – 23, 2020. 5 spots

May 30 – June 7, 2020. 5 spots

$11,500. Per person based on shared room and guide.

Where: Faraway from Guanaja, Honduras

Why: Getting to the remote cayes requires a two-hour helicopter ride, but once there some of the best guides in the Caribbean await to share this one-of-a-kind permit and bonefish destination.  Only operating for 12 weeks a year less than 60 lucky anglers each fish here each season, ensuring it remains mysterious and faraway.

The Faraway Cayes can offer some incredible opportunities at permit and bonefish, both on foot and from the boat. There are over 12 square miles of flats in the fishery, all offering prime habitat for flats species. These expansive flats are surrounded by coral walls that drop off into deep water. This access to deep water means fish regularly move onto the floats. Faraway Cayes bonefish are numerous and eager to jump onto a well-presented fly. These fish are larger than many other areas in Central America, averaging 3-6 pounds along with some larger fish pushing double digits. Although bonefish and permit are the main targets at Faraway, plenty of other species swim on the flats. Several types of jacks, snappers, large barracudas, lots of triggerfish, and even an occasional large tarpon will be spotted off the reef in deeper water. Permit run from small schoolie-sized fish on up to some very large ones, with plenty of sizes in between.
