Mexico: Fly Fishing Tabasco Trip Report

June 26, 23
For those who want to experience total immersion in “real” Mexico with an authentic, off-the-grid travel experience while at the same time gaining access to incredible baby tarpon fishing then Fly Fishing Tabasco is a great option. Run by Mexican fishing pioneers, Paco Marroquin and his son, Paco Marroquin Jr. the fishing program is focused more on the fly fishing and not on a resort experience. “While elegance isn’t the selling point, a high catch-rate is, thanks to a landscape that lends itself well to luxurious juvenile tarpon dwelling. As a fishery, Tabasco’s competitive edge is its lack of pressure and heartbreak. While other destination fisheries may send anglers home with nary a grip-and-grin, Tabasco stacks the odds in the fisherman’s favor. Several large rivers drain from the mountains and jungles through Tabasco and into the Gulf of Mexico, and most are loaded with fish,” as told my Hilary Hutcheson in the newest Drake Magazine.

And for Yellow Dog anglers, Michael and his 13-year-old son, Chris, having recently returned from their fly fishing adventure, it’s obvious they share the same praise for the fishery and guides. “Paco works very hard and was a pleasure to have as a guide. I would not hesitate to return. With respect to the fishing, it was better than I had thought. You can see rolling tarpon everywhere at certain times during the day, sometimes up to a dozen of them all around the boat.” Michael goes on to say, “Paco has a very positive attitude and really wants to get you on fish. I put him in the top third of guides I have fished with, based on technical ability, adapting to us and our skill levels, and overall attitude. Would not hesitate to fish with him again!” And when asked if they’d like to return, it was a strong “YES.”

“With so many hookups, the fishery is excellent for tarpon first-timers or seasoned anglers looking to hone their cast, their retrieve, or their hook-setting and fighting experience. While the occasional snook is hooked, the vast majority of your fish will be the smaller tarpon,” Hutchinson states.

Fly Fishing Tabasco is one of our favorite baby and juvenile tarpon fisheries found in the Caribbean. Between the great hospitality and good fishing, it’s a great destination for every angler.
