THE YELLOW DOG ESSENTIALS KIT

March 23, 2017

JUST IN CASE…

Every year, the Yellow Dog team spends weeks on the road — sometimes even months — exploring new destinations, visiting our partner lodges, and doing a bit of fishing on our own time. Over the years, we’ve dealt with our fair share of stubborn gear that likes to break at just the wrong time.

Yellow Dog’s Jim Klug penned a feature for the 2017 Guide to Angling Travel that will help ensure you’re prepared for gear-related eventualities and problems. Read below to see what Jim carries for those expected moments.

“In order to deal with and correct these types of unforeseen problems and mechanical challenges, I’ve assembled my own ‘traveling MacGyver’ kit — a collection of tools, repair materials and doodads that can come in handy and save the day when things go wrong. Over the years I’ve fine-tuned, tweaked, added to and improved upon what I call my ‘traveling eventualities kit’ to the point that I never go fishing anywhere without bringing it along. The items in this kit have saved numerous trips and situations — both for myself and for my traveling companions. That means that if you want to be able to ‘stay in the game’ and be the MVP of your next group adventure, then assemble your own kit and throw it in your gear bag before heading out for your next trip. You’ll be ready for just about anything, and capable of repairing and fixing the problems that routinely occur when you’re far from home (and even further from your local fly shop).

The key to creating the right kit, of course, is the ability to include all of the right ‘ingredients’ while at the same time keeping the overall size and weight of your kit to an absolute minimum. Assembling small amounts of key ingredients into a small and compact case that holds everything is the key, and once packed, all of the items below should fit neatly into a small 8” x 4” zippered case. Here’s a look at what’s in my bag when I travel:
