“There is literally nothing on the run out to Scorpion Atoll except a blank horizon and dark, blue water in every direction. After 4 hours or so, the lighthouse and other small islands start to show on the horizon as the engines wind down. The sense of remoteness and wonder finally starts to become real for me as I catch glimpses of white sand flats surrounding the approaching islands.” – Toby Swank, Owner of Fins and Feathers of Bozeman from Yellow Dog’s first trip to the atoll.

Scorpion Atoll is one of the few truly remote destinations left on the planet. Fortunately, enough, Yellow Dog calls the incredible destination one of the places we fish. The atoll is the largest coral structure in the Gulf of Mexico and due to its marine park designation, is protected from commercial fishing. For the fly fisher, this means an incredible fishery. Anglers can cast to bonefish and permit as well as barracudas, triggerfish, sharks, amberjacks, mutton snappers, and other Caribbean flats species.

As far as permit fishing goes, these flats could be some of the best in the world. Enjoy fishing for tailing permit while wading in shallow water. The seclusion and phenomenally diverse fishery evoke images of other exotic destinations that Yellow Dog books like Christmas Island and the Seychelles – only that Scorpion Atoll is more or less in our backyard with its location in the Caribbean.

Before taking the trip out to the Atoll, anglers will stay a night in Merida where they can enjoy all the rich Mexican culture. And for the remainder of the trip at the atoll, guests will stay on a comfortable mothership fully equipped with air conditioning, bathrooms, and electricity. Indulge in fresh ceviche, fruits, and a cold beverage while relaxing and enjoying the gorgeous destination.

Scorpion Atoll is the type of destination every serious angler should experience once in their lifetime. Availability is still open for the weeks of:

May 3rd – 9th, 2018

October 7th – 13th, 2018

In the words of Toby Swank, “Scorpion Atoll has been getting more and more buzz throughout the fly-fishing world. In my experience, this means that you should go now or very soon, as it will be a different destination in 5-10 years. However, this is not the place for the inexperienced flats angler or the typical husband/wife tandem that hope to have wine and ceviche every night. This trip is for the angler that wants to go for big bonefish and plentiful permit shots at fish that receive very little pressure relative to just about everywhere else in the western hemisphere!”
