The “Return to Los Roques” Program

March 20, 26

Secure Your Place for One of the Most Legendary
Flats Fisheries in the Caribbean

For decades, anglers in the know quietly regarded Los Roques as one of the finest bonefishing destinations anywhere in the world. Vast wadeable flats, enormous areas of protected water, and healthy populations of large bonefish made this remote Caribbean archipelago a legendary destination for saltwater fly anglers.

Then, beginning in 2019, travel restrictions between the United States and Venezuela effectively closed the door for American anglers.

The fishery itself never stopped operating. International anglers from Europe and South America continued to fish the flats, the guides stayed on the water, and the lodge remained active — but for U.S. anglers, Los Roques largely disappeared from the conversation.

Now, travel conditions appear to be improving, and the expectation is that U.S. anglers will once again be able to visit Los Roques in the near future. To prepare for that reopening, Yellow Dog Flyfishing is launching a special program designed to allow anglers to secure future dates now — with complete peace of mind.

The “Return to Los Roques” Early Access Program

Anticipating that things will soon open and normalize for U.S. anglers wanting to fish Los Roques, Yellow Dog is excited to offer a limited number of advance reservations and prime weeks for the 2027 season – an opportunity that allows anglers to secure dates now before travel officially reopens.

This program is designed to give anglers priority access to one of the Caribbean’s most iconic fisheries while eliminating the financial risk normally associated with booking travel to a destination that is still in the process of reopening. And, while the fishery has been in continuous operation for international anglers, for nearly seven years it has seen little pressure from the American flyfishing market.

Limited Early Access Availability

This program is being offered on a limited basis in partnership with our long-time Los Roques outfitter, and Yellow Dog is initially offering a limited block of 10-12 weeks of fishing for the 2027 season under this program. Early reservations will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis for the 2027 season.

How the Program Works

Step 1 – Secure Your Dates

A 25% deposit is required to hold and reserve your preferred 2027 travel dates. Unlike standard bookings, your deposit is held securely by Yellow Dog and is not transferred to the lodge until travel is confirmed.

Step 2 – When Travel Reopens

Once travel access for U.S. anglers is confirmed and operating normally, a second 25% deposit will be due, bringing the total deposit to 50% of the trip cost. (This mirrors the standard deposit policy for Los Roques programs.)

Step 3 – Final Balance

The remaining 50% balance will be due 90 days prior to the start of your trip, as with all standard Yellow Dog travel bookings.

The Yellow Dog “Peace-of-Mind Guarantee”

This program is designed specifically to eliminate the uncertainty surrounding future travel. If Los Roques is not open to U.S. anglers by your scheduled 2027 trip dates, Yellow Dog will provide:

  • Option 1 — Full Refund. Receive 100% of your deposit returned in full
  • Option 2 — Full Travel Credit. Apply 100% of your deposit toward any other Yellow Dog destination worldwide
  • No penalties. No administrative fees. No risk.
  • Your deposit remains protected with Yellow Dog holding all funds until travel access is confirmed.

Reserve Your Dates

If you are interested in participating in the Return to Los Roques Early Access Program, please contact Yellow Dog Flyfishing. Our travel team will be happy to discuss available dates, travel expectations, and the latest updates regarding access to Venezuela.

Why Book Now?

When travel to Los Roques fully reopens for U.S. anglers, demand is expected to be extremely strong.

For many anglers, Los Roques represents one of the last great classic Caribbean bonefish destinations — a vast national park with hundreds of islands, enormous wadeable flats, and remarkably healthy fish populations. Many anglers who experienced Los Roques before 2019 still describe it as one of the best bonefishing destinations they have ever fished.

By reserving early, anglers can:

  • Secure prime dates before the destination becomes widely available again
  • Lock in access to one of the Caribbean’s most unique flats fisheries
  • Enjoy a completely risk-free booking process backed by Yellow Dog

What Makes Los Roques So Unique?

Los Roques offers something that has become increasingly rare in modern flats fishing: space and solitude. The protected national park contains more than 350 islands and cays surrounded by miles of shallow flats, coral banks, beaches, and mangrove lagoons. What truly sets the fishery apart is the exceptional wade fishing. Many days are spent stalking tailing bonefish across firm white-sand flats or walking shallow shorelines searching for cruising fish. Daily catches of 10 to 20 bonefish are common, with fish averaging four pounds and larger fish encountered regularly. For anglers who love sight casting and covering water on foot, Los Roques remains one of the most exciting and rewarding saltwater fisheries anywhere in the Caribbean.
