Trip Overview

Located on southern end of Abaco, Blackfly Lodge is a great option for couples and small groups of friends looking for a lodging situation that is both intimate and private. Rarely do you find first-class accommodations and first-class fishing in the same venue. The newly-constructed Lodge emulates the style of traditional Bahamian family mansions characteristic of downtown Nassau in the early 1900s. As nice as the Lodge is, however, the strongest attribute of this operation is the guide team – some of the most in-demand professionals in the Bahamas. The waters fished by these pros are uncrowded and pristine, presenting excellent opportunities for big bonefish, occasional permit, tarpon, mutton snappers and numerous other species.

Lodging Details
This lodge is a unique and specialized destination for the Bahamas. The all-new Blackfly Bonefish Lodge sleeps eight (8) anglers in private rooms with a private bath. The rooms open to a wrap-around second story porch that overlooks the stunning new harbor of Schooner Bay. Each room is named for a fly fishing celebrity, and these flats are decorated with artwork portraying these individuals, painted by Lodge partner and renowned artist, Vaughn Cochran, founder of Blackfly. Ideally situated, the Lodge is only minutes from the boat launch.
Food and Beverage
Meals are prepared by local chef Devon Roker. An incredible made-to-order breakfast starts off each day, along with a great cup of coffee, homemade espresso or latte. Lunch is always a treat and the kitchen comes up with something new each day. The Blackfly kitchen uses organically-grown fresh herbs and vegetables from the Schooner Bay/Lightbourn Farm, and all seafood is caught locally. Chef Devon serves conch, lobster and a daily fresh selection of seafood. In season, you may find stone crab claws on your dinner plate or a fried lobster sandwich for lunch. The daily post-fishing routine kicks off with late-afternoon appetizers and Captain Clint’s famous Mojitos. The Blackfly Bar is an open bar except for select brands for which you would normally pay an additional charge. There is always an ample supply of Kalik (the official beer of Bahamian fly fishing) and several premium rums are also available.
Typical Length of Stay
Trips of any length can be arranged. There are no specific transfer days so you can arrive and depart on any day of the week and stay for any number of days.
Non-Angling Activities and Options
Blackfly Lodge is located in the heart of Schooner Bay, a new Bahamian village built as a sustainable community incorporating all of the qualities of the "New Urbanism" concept. There are no cars except for necessary delivery vehicles, and transportation is primarily by golf cart or bicycle. Miles of beautiful beaches are a short walk from the Lodge and are some of the most beautiful we have found anywhere in the Bahamas. The village of Schooner Bay offers extensive nature trails that were built in the old-growth Bahamian forest. Guided trips with a local naturalist are available. Other activities can be scheduled in other parts of the island, including diving and snorkeling packages. Marsh Harbour is 40 minutes from the Lodge and offers many tourist activities and shopping. Rental cars are available.
Internet / Communications
The Lodge does offer high-speed Wi-Fi for all guests and a Vonage phone for international calling. Most U.S. cell phones will work throughout the area depending on your service plan.
General Information
Blackfly Lodge is located in the heart of Abaco’s exceptional flats systems, offering anglers great diversity with fishing scenarios. Its location on the southern end of the famous "Marls of Abaco" allows guides to easily access all the flats with minimal running time in boats.
The guide staff at Blackfly stacks up with any lodge in the Bahamas. They are all fun to fish with, true professionals, and very knowledgeable of the local fisheries and species of game fish. Centrally located between Marsh Harbour and Sandy Point, the lodge guides have easy access to the most elegant flats on Abaco Island, including areas such as Cherokee Sound, the Southern Marls, Sandy Point and the "town flat," and Cross Harbor. Located across from the front entrance of Schooner Bay, the boat ramp is minutes from the Lodge,  if you are seeking minimal running time in the boat to maximize your fishing This ramp allows guides to fish the flats between the Southern Marls and the Sandy Point area with virtually NO running time in the boat. On your arrival and departure days, or if you would like a day off from guided fishing, several prime wading spots are within walking distance of the Lodge.
The flats throughout the area are fantastic for wade fishing and poling; the tides will dictate when and where to wade and when to fish from the boat. Weather permitting, the guides at Blackfly can also make the 45-minute run to Moore's Island and Gorda Key, some of the top bonefish and permit waters in all of the Bahamas long known only to the most traveled anglers. We have found the fishing in this area to be uncrowded and pristine, with excellent opportunities for big bonefish. Permit, occasional tarpon, mutton snapper and numerous other species also frequent the area.
Boats and Equipment
New East Cape “Blackfly Lodge Edition” skiffs are perfect for making the run to the outer islands, as well as for poling the shallow waters closer to the main island. Many clients comment that the boats are the best designed and most comfortable flats boats from which they have ever fished. Each custom boat comes equipped with the latest safety equipment, including local cell phones with pre-programmed Lodge phone numbers, Spot Messenger for satellite communication, spare parts boxes with an extra prop, and fully-inspected first aid kits.  The front deck of each boat provides your choice of custom leaning post, casting platform or clean deck. Yellow Dog recommends that anglers bring their gear and equipment, including rods, reels, wading boots, flies and all terminal tackle. All of this gear can be purchased beforehand at the Blackfly Outfitter online store. Items such as leaders, flies, sunglasses, hats, Buffs, and Blackfly Lodge clothing are available at the Lodge’s fly shop.

"Managed by long-time friend Clint Kemp, Blackfly is exceptional in every respect. We fished to a number of really large bonefish and were presented with numerous shots at some gagger-sized Permit.  A few were ridiculously large, at well over thirty pounds! Our visit was nothing short of outstanding."
- Doug McKnight (Yellow Dog Bahamas Program Director)
