Trip Overview

Of the numerous bonefish destinations found throughout the Bahamas, none offer the elegance, privacy, and high-end resort amenities of Kamalame Cay. This 97-acre private island resort is the perfect retreat for couples and families seeking a unique Caribbean experience catering to both anglers and non-anglers alike. There are seven different lodging options at Kamalame Cay, allowing you to custom-create the perfect accommodation package for you, your family, or your group of anglers. Kamalame offers a full-service, fantastic spa built high over the water – the nicest in all of the Bahamas. One great thing about the location of Kamalame is its proximity to both the Joulters Cays to the north and the town of Red Bays to the east, which allows easy access to fish Andros' West Side. For those who wish to chase bonefish on their own, the expansive home flats on the backside of Kamalame can also be fabulous.

General Information

Andros Island, located approximately 150 miles east of the Florida Keys, is one of the world’s premier bonefish destinations. This Bahamian Island, which is over 100 miles long and in places, up to 40 miles wide, consists of vast areas of flats, creeks, cays, cuts, mangroves and incredibly fertile fishing grounds. Kamalame Cay Resort, situated on the northeast corner of the island, allows access by skiff to many flats that are relatively close to the Resort’s dock, or alternately by trailering the boat to the Joulters Cays or the West Side of Andros.
When fishing during a stay at Kamalame, there are numerous options from which to choose. You may start your day from the Resort’s dock and fish the oceanside flats and inland creeks along the eastern shore of Andros. These flats hold large and aggressive ocean bones that feed around sandy, coral shorelines adjacent to deeper water. Inland waters and lagoons are accessed via creeks and channels that run across the island. Smaller schooling fish can be targeted in the inner mangroves and protected flats areas at all times of the year. These inland waters provide excellent protection on windy days.
Another option is to drive north to the famous Joulters Cays, a collection of small islands just north of Andros that are surrounded by endless white sand flats that seem to blend into the horizon. The Joulters might be one of the most populated areas for bonefish in the world, and tailing and large schooling fish can be found in abundance.
Trailering a boat to nearby Red Bays allows easy access to the Andros' famed and wild West Side with minimal running time. This side of the island is acknowledged as one of the top “trophy bonefish” areas in the world. The west coast is also one of the better destinations in the Bahamas for tarpon fishing, which usually is best from April through August.
One of our favorite aspects of the Resort is the vast, nearby home flats, which allow anglers to wade-fish the backside of Kamalame Cay while non-fishing family or friends enjoy the beach, pool, or spa. These flats are a short walk from your accommodations and calculating the prime times relating to the tides will afford great fishing for relatively short periods of time. You can also drive the cart path that runs along the flats in a golf cart. Cruise the path with your 8-weight and a cooler of beer, hunting for tails and nervous water on your own!
Boats and Equipment
Anglers are targeting the flats fish from Maverick skiffs with 75HP Yamaha engines. The offshore fishing program at Kamalame utilizes a 24-foot Pathfinder V-hull center console and is rigged and outfitted with tackle. Yellow Dog recommends that anglers bring all of their gear and equipment, including rods, reels, wading boots, flies and all terminal tackle.
How To Get There
Most travel to Andros Island's Andros Town Airport (ASD) should route through Nassau International Airport (NAS) due to the frequent flights and reasonable costs. Whether flying into San Andros (Western Air), Andros Town-Fresh Creek (LeAir), Mangrove Cay (Flamingo and LeAir) or Congo Town (Western Air), there are two flights daily into every small airport on Andros. The first flight is typically early in the morning (approximately 6:30 AM) and second is usually scheduled for later in the afternoon (approximately 3:30 PM). We always suggest a buffer of at least two hours between all arriving flights and departing connecting flights while in Nassau. Charter flights from Florida to Andros can also be arranged. Contact Yellow Dog for more information.

Arrival and Departure Details / Times

Once you arrive on Andros, any taxi at the airport will deliver you to the Resort. The cost is around $50.00 each way. On departure day, make sure to leave ample time for connecting flights on your return trip, due to customs and immigration. We recommend at least 1.5 hours to deal with departure and immigration procedures. Private air charters can be arranged by contacting Yellow Dog. Kamalame is a short 30-minute ride from the Andros Town Airport (ASD).
Documents Required
All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport that does not expire within six (6) months of trips dates. Please be sure that your passport has at least two blanks, unstamped pages remaining in the back, and that it is not torn, delaminated, or damaged in any way.

Client Testimonials
"Kamalame was excellent! The food, accommodations, and people were all great, and fishing the Joulters was awesome. That was the first time we had a chance to wade fish for bonefish, and now we're hooked for life! We saw lots of things on the flats - rays, crabs, conch, starfish, tons of sharks. We even got to stop and watch two nurse sharks mating in about a foot of water; 6 or 7-foot fish biting and flopping around. Amazing. How many times do you get to see that in your life? We caught some nice bonefish, and Melissa caught her first 'cuda right behind the lodge on the home flats. Our guide, Fleming, was perfect. His personality was great, and his instructions to a novice bonefisherman like myself were priceless. Fishing the flats right at the lodge was productive as well. Setting up and ‘ambushing’ the bonefish on the incoming and outgoing tides around the creeks and mangroves was unforgettable, and all within a short walk from our room. A trip we will never forget. Thanks to Yellow Dog for everything. We hope to go fishing with you guys again soon!"

- Keith & Melissa M. (Palmdale, CA)
"Though only a few hours away, Kamalame seems a world away. With its stellar accommodations, delightful staff, and a true sense of community it is well above all other places that we have ventured to. To be able to awake to views of turquoise seas and fiery skies is something we had only dreamed of previously. To be able to stroll on a seemingly endless white sand beach without seeing another person was a truly unique experience. The food and drink were scrumptious and serviced top drawer. Kamalame is not a just a lodge; it is a destination. Your company’s service is second to none, and we are already strategizing on our next trip. With your support, I am hopeful it will happen. Thank you again for all of your help. We very much look forward to utilizing Yellow Dog shortly."
