Estancia Laguna Verde's Main Lodge, named for the nearby "Laguna Verde" (green lagoon) is in the remote and isolated Lake Strobel area in the province of Santa Cruz. This building is typical of a Patagonian estancia: a classic working ranch house that has been rebuilt into a comfortable and functional fishing lodge. Five double-occupancy bedrooms attach to the Main Lodge, and each features a private bathroom and two single beds. One of the rooms can be converted into a bedroom to accommodate couples. The spacious living room overlooks the “home waters” of Laguna Verde, a small lake that is loaded with fat rainbows and brown trout. The living room features a TV with satellite connection, Wi-Fi for internet access, a fully-stocked fly tying desk for guest use, and a great main bar. Electricity runs 24-hours a day via windmill generators with fuel generators as back up. Laundry service is provided twice a week.

Food and Beverages
Estancia Laguna Verde offers very good cuisine and typical Argentinean food, including a weekly "asado" (Argentine BBQ), famous Patagonian lamb, and the best international dishes. All meals are of course served with great wines from Mendoza and other parts of Argentina. Lunches each day are cooked and served hot on the shores of the lake while fishing with your guide. Overall, the menu and the meals at the lodge are fantastic.
Typical Length of Stay
The typical lodge package at Estancia Laguna Verde is seven (7) nights / six (6) days of fishing. Most packages run Saturday through Saturday. Please contact Yellow Dog for more details.
Non-Angling Activities and Options
Estancia Laguna Verde is situated in a very remote part of Argentina, and overall, this is a fishing-focused operation. That said, there are a handful of non-angling activities that are available, including enjoying the wonderful landscapes, exploring the huge acreage of the estancia, birdwatching, or trekking the enormous ranch. The Estancia can also arrange short day tours to such destinations such as Cardiel and Pueyrredón Lake, Las Manos Cave, Pinturas, the Santa Cruz River, and several other locations. For bird watchers, southern Patagonia is an internationally-renowned destination, offering extraordinary opportunities to admire beautiful birds and other fauna typical of this unique region of Patagonia.
Internet / Communications
The Lodge offers guests unlimited Wi-Fi Internet access. Cell phones do not work in this area.
Located on Argentina's world-famous Jurassic Lake, this incredible destination offers not only extraordinary fishing on Lake Strobel (a.k.a. Jurassic), but also fantastic moving water action at the Lodge’s privately-controlled Barrancoso River. This is key for the simple reason that while there is another operation that fishes on Jurassic Lake, Estancia Laguna Verde is the only lodge with an entire river tributary that flows directly into the big lake. They own the river and have exclusive access to these incredible waters. During the months of November and December, and again in late March through April, the river offers fantastic action for incredible numbers of huge rainbows. Guests staying at Estancia Laguna Verde can also fish more than eight kilometers of Moro Creek, a small creek located on the Estancia's private property that chains 15 smaller lakes together. Moro Creek is fished in three sections and holds large fish during the early part of the season in the months of November through January. This small seasonal creek fishes great with dry flies and mouse patterns. Guests have access to all of the smaller lakes located on the ranch as well. These highly-productive waters are all loaded with large trout and surrounded by breathtaking Patagonia "meseta." It's important to point out that unlike fishing for sea run trout in Tierra del Fuego or on the Gallegos River (in the province of Santa Cruz) where the seasons are very short, at Jurassic Lake, on the Barrancoso river, and on the 15 smaller lakes inside the estancia, fishing maintains an excellent level throughout the season, which lasts from November until mid-April.
Much of the fishing at Estancia Laguna Verde takes place on Lake Strobel (Jurassic Lake) itself, and the Estancia offers direct private access to more than 10 kilometers of coastline along the lake. One of the best fishing areas of the lake - "Monster Bay" - owes its name to the unbelievable quantity and size of the fish that are caught there. These waters are largely protected from the winds, making the fishing in the Bay very easy regardless of wind and weather. On clear days with good light conditions, anglers can expect a lot of sight fishing with small nymphs, dries and small streamers. This can happen on literally any day of the season, and big dry flies can always be fished when the weather is calm.
The coastline of Estancia Laguna Verde's property also has a number of smaller bays, which gather great quantities of fish and offers protection in windy conditions (which can be a common factor in the area). In order to experience great fishing every day of the week regardless of the weather, it is important to be able to cover a lot of different water and move around to different locations depending on conditions. This is accomplished in one of two ways. For guests comfortable riding and driving ATVs, the lodge offers a number of Honda Four-Wheelers to use on the huge chain of estancia trails and roads. Guests who are not comfortable on ATVs will be driven to different areas via truck. The fish in Jurassic Lake are legitimately huge, and the stories that most anglers have heard about this place are absolutely true. The average size of the fish caught in the lake is probably 7 to 9 pounds, and fish in the 10 to 20-pound range are caught on a very regular basis. Spend a week at Jurassic Lake and the chances are incredibly high that you WILL catch the largest rainbow of your life.
Boats and Equipment
Almost all fishing in the area is done while wading and fishing from the banks of the lakes or the river. Guides may use small drift boats to access certain areas of the lakes (weather permitting) if needed. Most of the fishing is done wading along the edges, moving from spot to spot via the use of ATVs and trucks. It is recommended that anglers bring all of their own equipment with them, including rods, reels, waders, boots, all flies and terminal tackle.
How To Get There
For fishermen traveling to Estancia Laguna Verde, we recommend that you fly from Buenos Aires' Jorge Newbery Airport (AEP) to El Calafate Airport (FTE) in the province of Santa Cruz. El Calafate has a newly-built international airport, where more than 10 flights a day arrive and depart. There are direct flights to El Calafate from Buenos Aires, Bariloche, Rio Gallegos, Rio Grande and Ushuahia (Tierra del Fuego). The El Calafate airport is serviced by Aerolineas Argentinas and LAN Airlines.
Arrival and Departure Details / Times
When possible, we suggest that you arrive the night before the start of your week at the Lodge, which means that you would fly into El Calafate (FTE) on Friday afternoon or evening and then overnight in a local hotel. Saturday morning you will be picked up at the hotel by the Lodge's transfer vehicle and driven to Estancia Laguna Verde Lodge, a trip of approximately 4 to 5 hours. There are a number of comfortable hotel options in El Calafate, some good restaurants, and plenty to see and do, including touring the nearby glaciers.

"The Fishing was fantastic. The facilities and food were great and the guides were excellent. I captured the top four largest rainbows of my life, including a monster that was 23 pounds."

"I wanted to personally thank you and your staff for the feedback and additional information that you guys pushed my way prior to my trip to Strobel Lake. It really helped me consolidate my gear and tailor the flies that I needed to tie when I had very little time on the bench. Estancia Laguna Verde is an incredible venue! The food is phenomenal, the accommodation is great, the guides are incredible, and the fishing is out of this world. I landed some farm animal-size fish...definitely some of the biggest trout I'll likely ever catch. Some new bread-winner flies (with some Mike McClary flare) have also come to life for Strobel Lake and become new additions to the guides' fly boxes too. Felt obliged to surrender a slew of materials to keep those flies catching over there. Lucinano and Roberto both had great things to say about Yellow Dog, and I completely agree. Keep doing what you're doing. Looking forward to booking my next trip with you guys."
