Trip Overview

Established in 1897 as a wool-producing sheep ranch, Estancia Maria Behety is the most well-known and established destination for anglers fishing the famed Rio Grande River. The 275,000-acre estancia has a rich history as one of the largest wool producers in South America, and still supports a healthy population of sheep and an enourmous sheering operation. The property also boasts over 32-miles of private access along the Rio Grande River, which means that anglers staying at the lodge have the very best chance at fishing to healthy populations and strong numbers of active sea run brown trout throughout the entire season. Estancia Maria Behety offers two different lodging options. Estancia Maria Behety Lodge allows twelve rods per week, while the fully restored and elegant Menendez Family Home called ‘La Villa de Maria Behety’ hosts six anglers per week.  Not only is the fishing world-class, but the service and food at either location on the Estancia is exceptional, and the seasoned and veteran guide team is the best in the region.

Lodging Details
The Maria Behety property offers two different lodging options, Estancia Maria Behety and La Villa de Maria Behety.

La Villa de Maria Behety is a classic, old-style mansion that has been fully restored and has availability for 6 anglers per week. The state house of this historic sheep ranch and the family house is impressively beautiful and is a wonderful place for couples or groups that prefer elegant and sophisticated accommodations along with an appreciation for historic architecture and restoration projects.

Estancia Maria Behety is perched on a bluff overlooking the Rio Grande River. The spacious common area has a large central fireplace, comfortable couches and chairs to fully relax, as well as a full bar. There are 6 well-appointed individual bedrooms that connect to the common area. Each bedroom has its own private bathroom. Guests join together in a separate dining room around a large table for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition, there is a large wader room in which to hang and dry waders, boots and equipment.

Food and Beverages
Estancia Maria Behety offers fine cuisine and typical Argentinean food, including a weekly "asado" (Argentine open fire barbeque), famous Patagonian lamb, and the best international dishes. All meals are served with great wines from Argentina’s famous Mendoza area as well as other parts of Argentina. Each day, lunches are cooked and served in the lodge followed by a ‘siesta’ (the obligatory time of rest in Argentina and Spanish for ‘nap’). Overall, the menu and the lodge’s cuisine are fantastic.

Typical Length of Stay
The typical lodge package at Estancia Maria Behety is seven (7) nights / six (6) days of fishing.  Packages run Saturday through Saturday. Please contact Yellow Dog for more details.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
Estancia Maria Behety is situated in a very remote part of Argentina, and overall, this is a fishing-focused operation. That said, there is a handful of non-angling activities that are available, including enjoying the wonderful landscapes, exploring or trekking the vast estancia, or birdwatching.

Internet / Communications
The Lodge offers guests unlimited Wi-Fi Internet access. Cell phones do not work well in this area.

General Information.
Maria Behety’s property extends for nearly 32 river miles along the Rio Grande.  Guests at the two Maria Behety lodges fish more than 50 kilometers (102 pools) with the four lodges on the opposite side of the Rio Grande in a friendly, organized rotation that insures a quality, private fly fishing experience for everyone.

Each fishing day is divided into two fishing sessions, the morning session from 8 am – 1 pm and the afternoon session from 4:30 pm to dark.  Every pair of anglers will have a morning beat and an afternoon beat, allowing all anglers to fish different water each day.

Boats and Equipment
All fishing on the Rio Grande will be wade fishing.  The river is very comfortable to wade, with pea-sized gravel, very few large rocks, gradual banks, and relatively slow currents.

How To Get There
For fishermen traveling directly to Estancia Maria Behety, we recommend that you fly from Buenos Aires' Jorge Newbery Airport (AEP) direct to Rio Grande Airport (RGA) on Aerolineas Argentinas.  Upon arrival to Rio Grande Airport, you will be met at the airport exit and transferred 45 minutes by truck to Estancia Maria Behety.  Flying into Ushuaia is also an option, as Ushuaia offers a few more flight options.  For anglers that choose to use the Ushuaia Airport (USH), there is an additional charge of $75.00 per person / each way.  Drive time from Ushuaia to Estancia Maria Behety is a scenic 3 hour trip.

Arrival and Departure Details / Times
Currently Aerolineas Argentina is offering two flights from Buenos Aires to Rio Grande, one in the early morning and one mid-day. We recommend taking the afternoon flight down to Rio Grande and the morning return flight back to Bueno Aires.  However, given the past history of the airline and their tendency to change or eliminate flights, it is important that you still arrive on Friday and overnight in Buenos Aires, before catching your flight to Rio Grande the next day.

Documents Required
Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and other Western European nations do not need a visa for tourist trips of up to ninety days. Staple your duplicate of the landing card into your passport, next to your entrance stamp, as you'll need it to leave the country. If you do lose it, it's rarely a serious problem, but you'll have to fill in a new form at the border control. On entering the country, you will also be given a customs declaration form. Duty is not charged on used personal effects, books, and other articles for non-commercial purposes, up to the value of $300.
