Trip Overview

Robert’s Grove is a well-established, full-service beach resort located in one of the top permit fishing areas in Belize. It is the ideal base of operations for fishing in the southern part of the country, especially when accompanied by family members or a non-angling spouse. Guests can not only enjoy the amenities of a premier beach resort, but serious anglers will appreciate the proximity to prime fishing areas, an abundance of game fish, as well as experienced and seasoned fishing guides. Over 200 miles of flats, nearby rivers, lagoons, freshwater lakes and the largest reef in the western hemisphere provide great fishing and an opportunity to target tarpon, snook, barracuda, bonefish, and - more than anything else - permit. Robert's Grove is one of the few lodge operations in this part of the world that can meet the requirements of serious fly and light-tackle fishermen while at the same time satisfying the vacation wishes of non-fishing spouses and family members. The lodge’s satellite “out-island” operation is Robert’s Caye, a tiny one-acre island located eight miles off the mainland in the middle of the area’s highly productive permit flats

Lodging Details
Robert’s Grove is a large resort with several different accommodations options, from smaller, single rooms to larger, family-style suites. All rooms and suites feature private baths, air conditioning, ceiling fans and private terraces. The larger suites feature all of the same amenities as the standard rooms, with two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, a living room with futon couches, and a kitchenette. Overall, the accommodations are very nice - more in line with amenities found at a higher-end resorts rather than a typical fishing camp.

Robert’s Caye is a tiny one-acre island that is owned by Robert’s Grove and located approximately eight miles off the coast of Placencia. The Caye features four stilted cabanas built directly over the water. These cabanas are constructed with spacious decks and stairs that actually lower via a pulley system directly onto the small home flat. Each is outfitted with a king bed (or two twins, if requested), a full bathroom, and a private terrace with hammocks. An ideal setting for honeymooners and sportsmen alike, this “swept away” island paradise is surrounded by crystal-clear water, abundant marine life, and immediate access to some of the best permit fishing in all of Belize.

Food and Beverages
The main Resort offers three delicious and distinct restaurants — the acclaimed Seaside Restaurant, Sweet Mama's Belizean Restaurant and the more casual Habanero Mexican Cafe & Bar. The Seaside serves international and local cuisine, including plenty of fresh-caught seafood. The Habanero Mexican Cafe overlooks the Placencia Lagoon at the Robert’s Grove Marina and is open for lunch, dinner, sunset cocktails and late night drinks. Sweet Mama’s offers authentic Belizean meals at reasonable Belizean prices. There are also numerous restaurants and dining options in the nearby village of Placencia.

Typical Length of Stay
A standard package is seven (7) nights / six (6) fishing days, although trips of any length can be arranged. We can also easily customize a combo package that is split between Robert's Grove Beach Resort and their offshore private island, Robert’s Caye.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
The Resort offers a wide range of activities that the entire family can enjoy, including three freshwater swimming pools, a tennis court, a Sea Spa, and a fleet of canoes, kayaks, windsurfing boards and bicycles. Additionally, the Dive Center at Robert's Grove offers daily diving and snorkeling trips to the Barrier Reef and outer cayes. The Resort can also schedule day trips to the Monkey River, Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Reserve, and the area’s Mayan Ruins.

Internet / Communications
Wi-Fi is available free of charge for Lodge guests. Please bring your own laptop or PDA to access the internet. Depending on your service plan, some cell phones may also work at the lodge.

General Information
The waters off the coast of Placencia are perhaps best known for the large numbers of permit that inhabit the southern area’s huge chain of cayes and flats. If you are staying in Placencia or at the Inn at Robert's Grove itself, then you can typically plan on making a run of about 45-minutes each morning to fish. For the more adventurous anglers, staying at Robert's Caye will allow you to fish only minutes from where you are sleeping. Surrounded on all sides by deep, blue water, the healthy sand and turtle grass flats of the area are home to some of the largest permit populations found on the planet. A number of nearby mangrove islands also hold good numbers of tarpon that can range in size from 20 to over 80 pounds. Schools of bonefish can occasionally be found in some areas of the cayes for those anglers interested in pursuing the elusive grand slam.

Boats and Equipment
The guides that work out of Robert's Grove and Robert's Caye utilize pangas (skiffs) outfitted for fly fishing and light tackle saltwater fishing. These 23-foot skiffs usually feature a spacious casting platform, poling platform for the guides, and four-stroke outboard engines.  It is recommended that anglers bring their own rods, reels, flies and terminal tackle.

Client Testimonials

"I just wanted to drop you a line and say 'thank you' for all of your help with our vacation to Placencia. It was our third trip to Belize, and by far, our favorite. The resort and room were perfect, as was the balance of sun and relaxation mixed with fishing and adventure. Eworth was amazing. What a class-act and truly talented fishing guide! Everything was positive and upbeat and his admiration for the fish was infectious. He was patient and thorough. He stuck it out with me over two days and we finally cashed in and caught my first permit on the fly.  I've heard stories of guys who catch their first permit on an errant 30-foot cast, but unfortunately, that has never been me!  I've had way too many close encounters to count, including a handful of 30-40# class fish that engaged and pursued all the way back to the boat before flipping me the bird. Heartbreaking.  But, we eventually got it done the hard way and I earned my first!  Also caught some bones and jumped a couple tarpon. After we caught my permit, Eworth asked, 'So, do you feel different?'  I replied, 'Actually, I kinda' do.'  Laughing, he said 'It's worse, isn't it?'   Yes. It is worse. I am already thinking about going back for another shot at one of those big boys on the reef. Thanks again for a great trip. We'll be in touch when we starting planning our next trip."
- John H. (Grand Haven, MI)

"Yellow Dog booked our honeymoon at Robert's Grove and it was the trip of a lifetime! The Yellow Dog staff was unbelievable in putting everything together, customizing a package that was perfect for us. Robert's Grove was an amazing place to stay. The staff, the food, and the accommodations were all first class. The fishing experience was the best we have ever had, and our guide Eworth Garbutt was the man. My wife and I are already looking forward to our next adventure with Yellow Dog."
- Adam O. (Crested Butte, CO)

"It was the best fishing trip I've had in 45 years. It was like being on ESPN!"
- Gerald P. (Cape Coral, Florida)

"Our trip to Placencia and our stay at Robert's Grove / Robert's Caye was exactly what we were looking for to break up our cold Canadian winter! We saw more permit and had more legitimate shots at them on this trip than any other destination we've traveled to previously. Managing to catch a few was an absolute thrill! Our guide's (Eworth and Eloy) were terrific, and our 3 nights at Robert's Caye was the highlight of our trip (other than the permit of course). At Robert's Caye, Dorothy and Charles were wonderful hosts, Dorothy's cooking and hospitality was amazing, the cabins were spacious and clean, and the location was exceptional -located in the middle of some of the best permit flats we saw all week! We will be looking to go back again next year, and will try to stay a few extra days at the island! We will be booking again through Yellow Dog. The trip preparation and coordination, and hooking us up with exceptional guides certainly led to a great trip! Thanks again for everything!"
