A Personal Favorite Spot of the Late Ernest Hemingway
Bimini is the closest island in the Bahamas to Florida, sitting only 49 nautical miles east of Miami. From the Lucayan Indian word meaning “two islands,” it is known around the world today simply as “Bimini.” North and South Bimini, along with their smaller neighboring cays, make up this group of islands situated on the edge of the Great Bahama Bank. Surrounded by deep water, this is one of the most prolific fisheries in the Bahamas. This was one of Ernest Hemmingway’s favorite angling destinations and is a location that has been frequented by all of the big names in angling over the past sixty years. Whether you’re looking for flats fish, offshore fish, or for quality family time mixed with casual fishing, the Bimini Big Game Club is a fine option for serious anglers and non-anglers alike. You will find the overall comfort of the Club setting top-notch.
You will find the standard Club rooms, suites, and cottages at Bimini Big Game Club all well-appointed and colorful. The rooms are spacious, clean and similar to those of a nice resort hotel like those found in Florida. All rooms feature cable TV, coffeemakers, thermostat-controlled A/C, sitting areas, and plenty of space for gear and storage. The double rooms and suites all overlook the pool, and the Club’s garden cottages face the Marina. The Club’s “kidney bean” pool is surrounded by a shaded deck area with dozens of lounge chairs. An open-air game room provides a pool table and ping pong table.
Food and Beverages
All meals at Bimini Big Game Club are served in the elevated “Big Game Bar and Grill.” You may eat inside the grill area, at the bar, or on the deck overlooking the marina and flats. The menu is extensive, offering a wide range of Bahamian and American-style dishes. The daily special is usually fish that was caught that day by the offshore charters. During dinner, guests order the next day’s lunch for fishing.
The pool-side bar, Big Game conference area, Hemingway Lounge, and Main Bar are all well-stocked with all types of drinks and spirits. All non-alcoholic beverages and bottled water are included in the price of your package. The lodge features a fully-stocked bar with local beers, soda, juices, and mixers. The Club is happy to keep a tab for you during your stay.
If you seek additional culture and more local experience, numerous bars and restaurants can be found in nearby Alice Town. You may choose between renting a golf cart or simply walking into town.

Although famous for decades in bluewater and big game circles, Bimini is a lesser-known flats destination, despite having impressive and unpressured populations of big bonefish and permit. Recently, the flats of Bimini received protections under which flats species were designated as catch-and-release-only. Six current IGFA world record bonefish have come from the Bahamas, four of those from the waters surrounding North Bimini. Among the 23 historic bonefish world records caught in Bimini are a dozen of 14 pounds or more!
If you are in search of a quality-over-quantity bonefishing destination, then add Bimini to the bucket list. We would honestly stack this destination up against any big bone destination in the world. The flats are all within twenty minutes of the Bimini Big Game Club, and most of the bottoms consist of hard white sand which is great for wade fishing. The flats of Bimini are somewhat compact, but still large enough to support three to four skiffs a day. We’ve found the bonefish in this area average four to five pounds, and serious trophy fish are abundant. There are also some soft marl areas as well as oceanfront mottled-bottom flats. During the lower tides, the guides will pole across the flats to locate schools and tailing fish.
The rising tide is the most productive time to look for permit on Bimini. Permit here tends to be larger than their Central American cousins and are most commonly found riding the backs of stingrays. These fish can at times be aggressive but are still tough to feed and land. While tarpon can be seen around the Marina and during the warmer months on the flats, we would not classify this as a major tarpon destination.
The guides of Bimini are true professionals, informative, and fun to fish with. They take their bonefishing very seriously but are always willing to work with anglers of all skill levels and provide solid instruction.
Boats and Equipment
The guides run 16 Dolphin Super Skiffs with 45HP Yamahas, complete with poling platforms, plenty of rod storage, coolers with plenty of ice, and cushioned seats. It is recommended that anglers bring all of their own gear and equipment, including rods, reels, wading boots, flies and all terminal tackle.
