Trip Overview

Martin Pescador's incredibly diverse program gives anglers the chance to fish out of four different lodges and camps, with direct access to twelve world class rivers, eight lakes, and numerous streams throughout the region. With a reputation for guiding anglers to some exceptionally large trout, Martin Pescador utilizes a combination of jet boats, lake boats, and rafts to ensure access to even the most remote and untouched waters. Careful placement of Martin Pescador's Puerto Cardenas and La Junta Lodges allows for flexible and convenient access to the Yelcho, Futaleufu, Palena, Rosselot, Figueroa, Pico, and other rivers, where you can expect to catch rainbows, browns, sea-run browns, and occasionally salmon and brook trout. A typical week-long itinerary will have you fishing the Largo Yelcho region for three days out of Puerto Cardenas Lodge before transferring to La Junta Lodge on the Rio Rosselot.

Lodging Details
Puerto Cardenas Lodge
Upon arrival into the region, you will be picked up at the Santa Barbara airport and driven to Martin Pescador's Puerto Cárdenas Lodge, located on a beautiful bend on the Rio Yelcho. Here you will spend several days fishing. Each day you will either leave the Lodge directly by boat to fish the waters of the Rio Yelcho or Lago Yelcho, or drive a short distance to other fishing opportunities in the immediate area.

La Junta Lodge
During your final day of fishing at Puerto Cárdenas, you will pack before heading out for your day of fishing. If you wish, leave your things as they are and the staff at the Lodge is happy to pack for you. During that day, your luggage will be relocated to the beautiful La Junta Lodge. At the end of the day, you will be driven to the new Lodge, where you will find your luggage unpacked, your room ready, and pisco sours waiting. You will then spend the next several days fishing such waters as the Rio Palena, Rio Rosselot, Rio Figueroa, and Rio Pico. Other smaller rivers, lakes, and lagunas are available as well.

Lago Verde Lodge
If you are interested in adding a three-day extension onto the itinerary outlined above, you can stay and enjoy the fishing, scenery and hospitality of Lago Verde Lodge, located near the border of Argentina in the Xi region. This outpost lodge, built in 2009, sits atop a rocky bluff and has panoramic views of the lake with over a mile of private lake front. Guests will dine and relax in the Main Lodge, and overnight in comfortable, warm, carpeted canvas wall tents, each featuring a wood burning stove. Lunch each day will be served streamside. Dinner and cocktails, a hot shower, and a comfortable bed await your return each evening. Guests leave by boat from the lodge to fish each day, and float or walk wade some of the most scenic rivers found anywhere. Lago Verde, Rio Claro, Rico Pico and Rio Precioso are all waters that are accessed and fished from the Lago Verde Lodge.

Food and Beverages
Overseeing your needs at the Lodge is Anna Jansen, a professional chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America. Meals are prepared by Anna and her staff utilizing locally grown produce featured in traditional Chilean and international dishes. During your fishing day, lunch will be cooked riverside. After fishing, enjoy drinks on the lodge decks overlooking unspoiled temperate rain forests and glacier-topped mountains. On your final night of each lodge stay, the Lodge staff will prepare a traditional Chilean asado of slow-roasted barbecued lamb and local seafood.

Typical Length of Stay
Standard fishing packages at Martin Pescador are available in lengths of either seven (7), ten (10), or fourteen (14) nights. Please contact Yellow Dog for details.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
Patagonian Chile has much to offer the non-angler, and there is a great deal more to explore than just the trout fishing. Next to world-class fly fishing, Martin Pescador offers a great variety of non-fishing activities. These programs include horseback riding, bird watching, raft trips, hiking, and visiting any number of natural thermal hot springs in the area. The level of accommodations, service, food, and overall amenities make Martin Pescador a great location for couples trips that include a non-angler. The Lodge is happy to accommodate non-anglers.

Internet / Communications
The Martin Pescador Lodges do not offer Wi-Fi access or internet. Depending on your service plan, some cell phones may work in certain areas throughout the region.

General Information
Expert fly fisherman and lodge owner Frans Jansen has used his years of experience in Chilean Patagonia to establish a one-of-a-kind fly fishing program. The Lodge's professional, American guides, using first-class equipment, will guide you on a variety of different waters throughout the region. Martín Pescador Lodge utilizes jet boats, lake boats, rowboats, and rafts to access to even the most remote rivers, lakes, and lagunas throughout the area. Careful placement of Martín Pescador's Puerto Cárdenas and La Junta Lodges allows flexible and convenient access to the Rio Yelcho, Futaleufú, Palena, Rosselot, Figueroa, Pico, and other smaller rivers. On these waters you will catch rainbows, browns, sea-run browns, occasionally silver or Atlantic salmon, and brook trout. You can expect to be changing rods often (while both wading or drifting), casting big streamers to the banks, nymphing, and sight fishing for large trout using both large foam patterns and at times small dry flies. Fishing on Lago Yelcho includes casting large dragonfly imitations into the reeds, producing incredible takes and some seriously large fish.

Río Yelcho and Lago Yelcho
Together, this river and lake encompass the home waters for Martin Pescador's Puerto Cardenas Lodge. The Río Yelcho offers great fishing. Large rainbows cruise the surface, allowing you to sight fish with very small flies (the average size being 18 to 22). Lago Yelcho can offer fabulous fishing around the reed fields, where large brown and rainbow trout are found cruising and feeding aggressively on large dragon flies and damsels. At 38 miles long, this is the largest lake fished in Martin Pescador's program.

Río Palena
The upper section of the river fishes well with a variety of different dry flies, and is home to a tremendous number of rainbows and browns. As you proceed downriver, the Palena changes character and the classic riffles and runs slowly give way to log-strewn banks famous for hiding large, trophy trout.

Lago Rosselot
This magnificent body of water is home to all three species of trout, and the sight-fishing here is unparalleled. The large rainbows that live in this lake cruise just below the surface, ready to devour anything that hits the water.

Rio Rosselot
This outflow of Lago Rosselot is an impressive river with equally impressive trout. A large diversity of fishing scenarios on the Rosselot provide anglers with ever-changing conditions and techniques. Popping and skating dry flies, dead-drifting dry/dropper combos, and streamer fishing the banks and shelves can all be fantastic.

Boats and Equipment
Equipment includes jet-powered boats, lake boats with outboards, drift boats, rafts with high-backed seats, catarafts with jet engines, and 4x4 trucks with trailers. The Lodge does have a limited supply of demo and loaner rods and reels, although it is recommended that anglers bring all of their own gear and equipment, including waders and boots.

How To Get There

From there you fly by Lan Chile 737 jet to the Puerto Montt Airport (PMC), approximately two hours south of Santiago. Usually, guests will overnight in either Puerto Montt of nearby Puerto Varas (recommended) and fly out to the Santa Barbara air strip the following morning. Upon arrival in Santa Barbara, guests will be met by a representative from Martin Pescador and transported to the Puerto Cardenas Lodge.

Arrival and Departure Details / Times
After processing through customs and immigration in Santiago, you can easily catch a late-morning or early afternoon flight to Puerto Montt. This two-hour flight is incredibly scenic, traveling along the Chilean Andes. The following morning, you will take a taxi to a small airstrip in Puerto Montt to board a charter flight to Santa Barbara. Upon arrival in Santa Barbara, guests will be met by a representative from Martin Pescador and transported to the Puerto Cardenas Lodge.

Client Testimonials

"I fish a lot in Alaska and have caught rainbows bigger than in Chile, but never so many large fish so consistently. It's like I died and went to heaven every time I go there. Can I take up permanent residence there?"
