Fishing
This is a remote flats fishing expedition for species not encountered in many other parts of the world. Australia is home to over 2,500 marine species and many of the prime flats species are available on the east coast flats. From GTs and a host of other trevally species, to permit and the endemic blue bastard – you’ll find yourself needing a species book to work out what you have caught. If you have the opportunity to spend time on the reefs, you may find yourself hooked to Spanish (king) mackerel.
Integrated Programs
The Lockhart, Claremont Isles, and Lizard Island.
Boats and Equipment
There are three tenders used to fish from and to ferry anglers to the flats – where wading is the best tactic. Only two (2) anglers are paired with each professional guide – each guide is a certified skipper, with first aid qualifications and the enthusiasm to get their anglers into fish.
The mothership is your sanctuary at the end of the day and your chef and hostess will cap off your day with cold towels, cold beverages, and delicious meals. Relax on the top deck and watch the sun setting over the continent of Australia.
We recommend that you bring 10 and 12-weight rods. Lighter rods and reels need NOT apply here. Floating lines and/or the new intermediate clear sink tip lines by Scientific Anglers or Rio are used for the flats. Bring full intermediates and sinking lines if you plan on heading out to the blue water.
Flies
Expect to fish flats that are knee-deep to thigh-deep and sometimes from a boat. Medium lead eyes on shrimp and crab patterns. Yellow legs on crabs work well in the area and there is an olive mantis shrimp on the flats. White Flexo crabs are very popular with the guides.
Crab flies and shrimp flies in a 4-1/0 size range are commonly used. Bring a range of options, each with reasonable weight to get the flies to the bottom. Larfe shrimp patterns and squimp in size 1/0-2/0 are ideal for the blue bastards.Â
For everything else, 1/0-4/0 clousers and half and halfs up to 6/0 in white. In addition, usual olive over white, chartreuse, tan and yellow work well. Consider bringing flashy profile flies, deceivers, toads, poppers, and wiggle minnows. Strong hooks are essential and a variety of fluorocarbon strengths are recommended, from 20 lb. up to 50. Â
