The Birthplace of Australian Flats Fishing
Hervey Bay is arguably the birthplace of Australian flats fishing and boasts some of the most unique fishing on the planet. With baby black marlin making their way across the flats in November and golden trevally GTs red snappers and cruising queenfish – all summer (Southern hemisphere) – targeting these species with Hervey Bay Fly and Sportfishing is the best way to spend a day on the water and get your pulse pumping.
Only a short flight from Brisbane airport and on the Fraser Coast, Hervey Bay hosts an annual humpback whale migration July through November. Incredible wildlife abounds in the area and Yellow Dog highly recommends a short stopover or family holiday in the region.
Lodging is custom to the client and can be recommended at the time of booking.
Food and Beverages
Cold water and lunch is provided on daily guiding
Typical Length of Stay
Guiding can be catered for your stay. We always recommend putting enough time aside to give yourself the best chance with weather and tides, particularly if you have specific species in mind.
The wildlife from Whales and Dugong to turtles and the rare Fraser Island dingo is incredible. Hervey Bay is a fantastic location for a family holiday and the ecotourism opportunities such as swimming with the wildlife to laying on the beautiful white sand beaches and surfing.

From creeks in the Sandy Straits, the famous flats to blue water baitballs – fishing Hervey bay is unique as both the southern species cross over with the tropical north.
You will use a 9-11 weight rod and be casting clousers or surf candies to breaking schools of pelagics such as tuna and mackerel. An intermediate line is best suited to this type of fishing and works well when fishing the flats. Flats flies such as crabs and shrimp should be tied slightly heavier – with medium lead eyes and a sink tip line is useful to keep your flies on the bottom. Large golden trevallies tail and love a well-presented fly.
The small blacks are usually teased to the boat but free swimmers are regularly encountered and having a strong double haul and accurate cast may yield the fish of a lifetime. Billfish flies are provided but pink and white are favored colors if tying your own.
From first timers and novice anglers to seasoned world travelers – Hervey Bay fly and sportfishing can cater to a variety of abilities.
