General Information
This area offers the best of both fly fishing worlds: a short boat ride to the productive flats of Ascension Bay or a quick trip to the more secluded lagoons that surround it. Whether you want to wade the flats for schools of bonefish and permit or cast in shallow lagoons for tarpon, snook or barracuda, this is the ideal fishery for novice and seasoned saltwater anglers alike. If you’re a beginner saltwater angler, Ascension Bay is one of the best places in the world to take your first bonefish on a fly. For more seasoned anglers, this is one of the world’s best locations to take a permit on a fly! With hundreds of square miles of flats, it is not uncommon to see bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and barracuda all in the same day.

The “typical” conditions that one encounters when fly fishing the Ascension Bay area are as close to perfect as a saltwater angler can hope for. Bright sun, white sand flats, and crystal clear water create outstanding conditions for sighting and stalking fish. Even when the wind is blowing hard, the guides can usually find a lee in the mangrove-lined lagoons, which offer easier conditions for fly casting. Whether wading the warm sandy flats or fishing from the boat, Ascension Bay is an ideal destination for the saltwater angler.

Boats and Equipment
Classic 23-foot Mexican pangas provide comfortable water transport – particularly in strong winds and rough seas – and a stable casting platform for fly fishing. These pangas are easy to pole through shallow water and for decades have served the region's fishermen and guides.

All of the fishing can be done with light fly fishing tackle and fly equipment. If you wish to bring your own rods, reels, equipment and flies, Yellow Dog will be happy to send you a complete gear and equipment list prior to your departure. If you want to travel light and leave the gear at home, then your Day Trip package will include the use of a rod and reel. Leaders and flies are available for sale at the lodge.  The lodge does have a small retail area where you can purchase flies, leaders, tippet, sunscreen, and other items that you may need for the day.

How To Get There
All guests should book flights to Cancun International Airport (CUN). This is the hub for the entire area, including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Mayan Riviera.

Arrival and Departure Details / Times
Once you arrive to the Cancun/Playa del Carmen/Tulum area, Yellow Dog can arrange to have you picked up at any hotel or resort in the area for your Day Trip. When making a reservation, please be sure to provide Yellow Dog your full lodging details, including: the name of the hotel at which you are staying, your room number, the name under which the room is registered, and the phone number and contact information for the hotel.

Client Testimonials

"Far and away, one of the easiest and best flats fishing experiences I have found. It is an ideal fishery for the angler interested in sight fishing all the major species of flats gamefish. Combined with their great guides and wonderful hospitality, Pesca Maya ranks as one of my all-time favorite saltwater fishing destinations! Thanks Yellow Dog, for recommending such a fantastic operation!"
- Brad E. (Bozeman, MT)

"Thanks Yellow Dog. We had a GREAT day. For the first time out we learned a lot. Everything went like clock work - this is only the beginning!"
- Tom S. (Denver, CO)

“What a great program! I was able to fit in full day of fishing in Ascension Bay. Bonefish and plenty of shots at permit - all during what I had through would be a fishless week of family vacation in Cancun! Very easy and convenient. This is a program that I highly recommend.”
- Robert H. (San Antonio, TX)

"We would like to say thank you very much for making all the arrangements for our one-day fishing excursion to Pesca Maya Lodge. We had a fantastic day - good fishing, excellent guide, good transportation, excellent food and good weather even though it was pretty windy. We want to put in a good word for our guide, Filipe and his assistant Susano. They were excellent, very knowledgeable and very patient! We learned a lot from them and enjoyed their company very much. Thanks again."
