A Productive Tarpon and Permit Fishery Close to Home

Situated approximately 1,000 miles southeast of the southern tip of Florida, Puerto Rico offers year-round access to unpressured tarpon and a number of productive flats for pursuing tailing permit on foot. No Name Lodge is a small operation hosting no more than six anglers each week, perfect for groups of anglers or for a pair of friends to enjoy. Guests lodge right on the water of Boquerón Marina, a notable commercial fishing marina that provides the region with a plethora of fresh seafood options. Boquerón’s picturesque downtown is less populous and more inviting than some of Puerto Rico’s more popular cities, comprised of colorful architecture and ample dining options. Enjoyable nightlife options and an inviting downtown make for a fantastic way to enjoy the local culture after days on the water. Travel to Puerto Rico for American guests couldn’t be easier as passports are not required for entry, and you do not have to pass through customs. We recommend Puerto Rico to anyone who enjoys immediate access to productive saltwater angling, with comfortable, no-frill accommodations and an immersive cultural experience abroad.

General Information
Each day begins with your guide trailering the skiffs to the town of La Parguera, taking about 20 minutes on quiet rural roads.  La Parguera is a tiny community located on the southern shores of Puerto Rico, where the skiffs will be launched from a boat ramp. The average travel time in the skiff to start fishing is 15-25 minutes, depending on the target species. The area offers two means of targeting tarpon: inside the deeper flats of the barrier reef or tucked inside the mangrove bays. Both settings are productive as these tarpon have seen very few flies, and the variety allows anglers to fish the most productive areas depending on seasons, weather conditions, and tidal movement.

The permit fishing takes place on a series of pancake-style flats that act as the barrier reef to southern Puerto Rico.  Depending on the tides and conditions, the tailing permit will be targeted on foot or from the skiff’s bow. Similar to the style of permit fishing done in Southern Belize, anglers and their guide will search for tailing fish or fish accessing the shallow flats. While not receiving the same level of pressure as other Caribbean destinations, these fish are still difficult quarries!

Boats and Equipment
No Name Lodge utilizes three 17-foot Maverick skiffs with four-stroke 90 HP engines. They are equipped with poling platforms that will be utilized when fishing deeper waters that won’t allow for wade fishing. Each guide is a certified captain by the US coastguard and will be operating their skiffs professionally as a result. The guides have spare terminal tackle, outfits, and flies onsite, but anglers should come well-equipped for their trip as there is no formal availability of spare equipment.
