Sydney Fly Fishing in the Famous Sydney Harbor
Sydney is a city that needs no introduction, yet, hidden within its vast richness of waterways is an often-kept secret: the fishing. Sydney is arguably the greatest urban saltwater fishing destination in the world, with huge schools of pelagic fish inhabiting these waters. Anglers typically target Australian salmon and Kingfish, but there are also abundant populations of bonito, several species of tuna, amberjack, samson fish, cobia, and a host of other tropical and temperate species. The hard-fighting kingfish with its never give up attitude and dirty, line-breaking tactics is a favorite species. With options twelve months a year, a fly-fishing trip in Sydney Harbor is an easy add-on for anyone visiting Australia’s “Harbour City.”
Our outfitter here is one of Australia’s most experienced fly fishing guides. Honing skills on all manners of species across the world using all manners of tackle, the experience and attitude of our outfitter here will enhance any Sydney fly fishing trip. This is an operation that specializes in fly fishing, popping, offshore jigging, and spinning, and as such, they are able to target a wide range of fish. The fishing offerings in Sydney are incredibly legitimate and highly recommended by the Yellow Dog team.

General Information
Sydney Harbor is a body of water that is home to a huge abundance of marine life – from the smallest baitfish to predatory pelagics. What is truly amazing, however, is the amount of gamefish that can be found in the epicenter of a city dominated by towering skyscrapers and well-known landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and the Harbor Bridge.
The main target species here are Australian salmon (kahawai) and kingfish. Australian salmon are plentiful in Sydney Harbor. Not related to any salmonid, the fish can weigh up to 10 pounds and provide an exciting visual take, amazing leaps, and strong runs. Kingfish are big, strong, and aggressive, and run long and hard after being hooked.
The harbor is home to over 50 species of fish, many being available year-round. All of these day trips are very easy with nearby access from the city. This is the perfect destination for a quick holiday, a layover on your way to another regional destination, or if you are in the region for business.
Start times are around 6:00-6:30 AM for spring/summer/autumn, while winter is usually around 7:30-8:00 AM. Tours can be tailored to your personal choice upon request. Tours are available in Sydney Harbor or the Pittwater/Broken Bay/Hawkesbury region in Sydney’s North. We can suggest the best area for fishing based on current fishing conditions, weather predictions, and the easiest pick-up location for you.
Boats and Equipment
Our outfitter has fished Sydney Harbor for decades. He uses Edgewater boats with Evinrude E-Tec Motors. All equipment can be provided. Pelican coolers keep your beverages cool. Knowledgeable with both fly fishing and spin fishing, the boat has plenty of flies and lures for the harbor’s many species. The most common rod for the fishery is a 9-weight outfitted with both floating and intermediate fly lines and 15-25 lb. fluorocarbon leaders.

A non-refundable deposit of 50% per person is due at the time of booking to hold both space and guides. Full pre-payment is due 90 days prior to date of trip. For cancellations, all deposits and payments are non-refundable, and because of the operator’s strict no refund policy, Yellow Dog strongly recommends the purchase of trip cancellation insurance. Sydney Fly Fishing will not refund payments in the event of poor weather, and no refund can be made for unused arrangements or fishing time lost due to inclement weather. If the operator decides to cancel the tour due to unsafe weather conditions, then a trip credit may be issued for a future date within one year of original trip dates. Please note that this is entirely at the discretion of the operator. If a cancelled package is resold by either the operator or by Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures, then a full refund will be sent minus a $100.00 per person cancellation fee charged by Yellow Dog. Receipt of deposit and/or final payment is acknowledgment that registrant has read and accepts the deposit, cancellation, refund and responsibility clauses for these packages. Once again, Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures strongly recommends that anglers and guests purchase travel insurance for this trip.
