One of the Most Highly Regarded & Esteemed Rivers in Kamchatka
Due to the present situation with Russia-Ukraine as well as ongoing Covid-19 travel restrictions, Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures will – effective immediately – be suspending our Kamchatka program and all bookings for the upcoming season. For questions and additional details, please contact Yellow Dog.
The Sedanka River is without question, one of the most highly regarded and esteemed rivers in all of Kamchatka, and for any dry fly fisherman, it’s seventh heaven. This beautiful spring-fed river is home to a plethora of insects that hatch throughout the summer months, allowing anglers to cast to healthy, large, and aggressive rainbow trout. This is one of the few, if not only, rivers in Kamchatka where dries and mouse patterns are the number one fly patterns all week long. The Sedanka River Float trip is one of our favorite destinations in Kamchatka with professional American and Russian guides, great hospitality, fantastic food, and experiences anglers will remember for a lifetime.
Accommodation Details
Lodging Details
The accommodations on the Sedanka are rustic but offer every amenity needed to keep you comfortable, dry, and well-rested. Anglers will stay in 3 different base camps throughout their 6 days of fishing. Each is similar in infrastructure and equipped with flushing toilets, hot showers, a dining hall, and permanent wood-framed cabins where every two anglers will be assigned. All guest cabins supply a foam pad but anglers will need to bring their own sleeping bag, pillow, and shower towel. A small porch at each cabin makes it easy for anglers to hang their wet gear outside to dry or sit and enjoy a cocktail. The Sedanka is by far one of the most remote rivers in Kamchatka with a 3-hour Heli-flight from Petropavlovsk. The accommodations are the best anyone could ask for when they’re in the middle of nowhere!
Food and Beverages
Classic Russian cuisine such as borsh, ukra and a variety of soups, salads, and entrees will be served throughout a week on the Sedanka. At each meal, anglers can expect to have a selection of meats and cheese, fruit, salads, soup and a main dish consisting of pork, chicken, or beef. Breakfasts are always hearty and consist of hot cereals, toast, eggs, bacon, and fruit leaving anglers full and fueled for the day of fishing ahead. Lunches are served while on the river ensuring anglers spend as much time as possible on the water. Lunches include meats and cheese, toast for sandwiches, fresh salads, and freshly caught dolly varden cooked over an open fire. Beverages included in the package are bottled water, soda, and some Russian beers. For any additional adult beverages, we recommend anglers purchase alcohol at the Duty-Free in Anchorage prior to their departure for Petropavlovsk.
Typical Length of Stay
Due to the set weekly flight from Anchorage (ANC) to Petropavlovsk (PKC), the standard package is six (6) nights with six (6) fishing days.
Non-Angling Activities
Activities for non-anglers are extremely limited, as this is primarily a fishing-focused destination. The area does offer great opportunities for photos and great wildlife viewing, but this is not a trip that is recommended for anyone who is not primarily interested in fishing long and full days.
Internet / Communications
There is no internet connection or cell phone service while on the Sedanka float trip. Sat phones are the only means of communication while on the river.
Travel Details
How To Get There
Yakutia Air has announced that they will once again be flying the direct route from Anchorage’s Ted Stevens International Airport (ANC) to Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka (PKC) which is the quickest and easiest option. Flights will operate weekly from mid-July to mid-September. More information on these flights can be found by contacting Yellow Dog.
Arrival and Departure Times
With direct flight service to Kamchatka (PKC) from Anchorage (ANC), anglers can once again enjoy a quick and easy flight to the best rainbow trout fishing on the planet. The weekly Yakutia Air flight will depart from Anchorage on Monday mornings, with arrival in Kamchatka the following morning once the plane crosses the international dateline. With this schedule, anglers will no longer have to overnight in Petro on their way to camp, instead of proceeding directly from the airport to the helicopter that same day. After a great week of fishing, you will arrive back in Anchorage the following Monday evening. You will arrive back in Anchorage the same Monday morning after crossing back over the international dateline. This early arrival back to the States allows plenty of time to clear U.S. customs and immigration to connect up with your flight home that same day. For any international anglers not looking to travel through Anchorage OR if you would like to spend additional time in Russia, there are options to fly through Moscow, Russia, or Seoul, South Korea to arrive at Petro on different schedules.

Fishing
General Information
When fishing the Sedanka, there are 3 basic approaches that are regularly used: dry fly, mice, and streamers. Anglers will never see a bead or indicator during their week on this river. With an incredibly healthy population of rainbow trout averaging 18 – 27 inches in size, anglers can expect action throughout the day and the opportunity to hook a fish of a lifetime. Dry flies are the highlight for this river and one of the few rivers where dries are the primary fly. Mouse patterns are also highly regarded and offer an action-packed and very visual experience for anglers. During certain times of the year, super Kundzha is present throughout the river system along with various species of Pacific Salmon including the elusive Cherry Salmon which is only found in the Western Pacific along with Eastern Asia. Anglers will spend large amounts of time wading the various channels and braids of the Sedanka with transportation and some fishing taking place from inflatable rafts. This float trip is fully guided and will employ a rotation system so each day guests will have a different guide. With the area being full of lava bedrock and the Sedanka being spring-fed, it’s virtually “blow out” proof, meaning anglers will never have to worry about chocolate milk conditions after a few days of rain. The Sedanka truly is one of a kind and will leave a lasting impression on any angler lucky enough to fish such a spectacular river.
Boats and Equipment
All air transportation to and from the Sedanka River is by Mi-8 helicopter, which will transfer anglers to camp once a week. The flight time from Petropavlovsk is roughly 3 hours. Upon arrival, the guides for the week will assemble the rafts that will transport guests down the river over the course of the next six days. Anglers will fish from the rafts as well as wade fish prime sections of the river each day. There is no rental or demo equipment available on this trip, and no flies, leaders, or tippet for sale. That means anglers will have to bring everything with them, including rods, reels, lines, waders, boots, all terminal tackle, and flies. Please refer to Yellow Dog’s detailed pre-trip materials and packing lists for all required and recommended equipment.
