Luxury in a Wilderness Alpine Environment
Located in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage park, the environment surrounding Thousand Lakes Lodge is remote, beautiful, and unique. It’s a place that can be serene and silent yet in an instant, cold, raw, and unfriendly – but comfort is always close by.
Thousand Lakes Lodge is in the Central Highlands World Heritage Area of Tasmania, often referred to as the Western Lakes. To the West is the Walls of Jerusalem and to the East is the Great Lakes, and as the name suggests it’s the ideal base for exploring the Thousand Lakes area.
Here in this alpine environment, the air is noticeably clear and the silence is inspiring, on a still day. Birds and bugs are abundant, while fish surface within your reach. On days when the wind is high and the temperature drops, it will take your breath away and find you in awe of its harshness.
Dusk acts as a cue for native animals to commence their procession to scavenge food; wombats, quoll, Tasmanian devils, wallabies, and possums transform the area into a hub of activity.

Fishing
General Information
The fishing is superb for hard fighting and wild brown trout. Ranging from small local rivers and lakes to stalking lake edges and learning “loch” style techniques – the guides are nothing short of outstanding teachers and anglers. In fact, several guides have represented Australia in world fly fishing competitions and Martin Droz actually won the World Championship in NZ in 2008!
Each day anglers will fish different water and the range of sizes and catch rates will vary depending on location. Consider a numbers day to have a smaller average size and when chasing large tailing browns – you will want to make the most of each opportunity.
Fishing dry flies is the preferred technique for a large part of the year – sometimes two in tandem! But be prepared to fish a slow sinking line and streamers later in the season as this can be incredibly productive!
Boats and Equipment
The guiding team will supply quality waders and boots as well as complete rod and reel outfits for guests to borrow at no charge if needed. All other terminal tackle is also supplied at no additional cost including leaders, tippet, and flies.
Rates and Terms
Quoted on application with room packages starting from only $250USD and trout guiding starting at $550USD. Enquire now for specials and packages.
A maximum of 2 is guided on a boat.
