Golden Dorado in the Wine Country of Uruguay

For anglers who have more than a day and are looking for a rounded experience that offers more than strictly chasing golden dorado, the Winery Lodge Program is the ticket. After leaving the marina in Buenos Aires, anglers will fish their way across the channels and braids that make up the delta and ultimately find themselves entering another country — Uruguay!

Accommodation Details

Lodging Details
Upon arrival to the quaint port town of Carmelo, anglers will take a quick 10-minute transfer to Campo Tinto, a family-owned and operated boutique winery, where they will stay. The winery offers eight (8) finely furnished and spacious rooms for guests, along with a pool and beautiful fields of vines just steps from their patio, which is the perfect location to unwind after a full day on the water. The winery features a common room for guests to relax as well as a large, glass-walled dining room where guests can enjoy appetizers, wine tasting, and their meals.

Food and Beverages
In the morning, guests wake up to the sun rising over the vines outside their window and can enjoy a delicious breakfast of fruit, eggs made to order, and baked goods. Depending on what guests choose to do during the day, lunches are either taken on the water or can be enjoyed in the dining room at the winery.

The food at the winery is sourced by local farms and an on-site, organic garden and orchard. All of the rural Italian-inspired dishes are made in-house, including the bread and pasta, which will have guests in awe after a full day of action-packed dorado fishing.

The program includes a wine tasting before dinner, where the various wines of the vineyard are explained and paired with an assortment of appetizers. Tannat is to Uruguay as Malbec is to Argentina, and that is what winery has mastered — they have an impressive array of Tannat and Tannat blends that pair perfectly with a sunset and good company around a fire.

Typical Length of Stay
Three (3) nights minimum but stays of any length can be accommodated. Depending on flights, it is common for anglers to have a half-day of fishing on either the front or back end of their stay. For example, a 3-night stay includes 3.5 days of guided fishing.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
Wine tasting (included in package price). Yoga, horseback riding, massages, bicycle tours, a tour of the grounds, and tours of the quaint town of Carmelo.

Internet / Communications
Uruguay provides good cell phone coverage for anglers with international phone plans. There is reliable Wi-Fi at the lodge.

Travel Details

How to Get There
Getting to Argentina is not difficult. Take an easy overnight flight to Buenos Aires’ Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) from one of several major cities in the U.S. To help ensure things run smoothly and efficiently, UDA has partnered with LOL Argentina, a tourism services company, to provide transfers to and from our fishing destinations.

As anglers fish their way across the Rio Parana Delta, they will eventually come to a floating coast guard station where anglers will have their passports stamped to depart Argentina. When anglers arrive in the port town of Carmelo, they will make another quick stop to have their passports stamped to enter Uruguay. To return, the same process is completed in reverse.

Upon arrival in Carmelo, anglers will be transported from the boat dock approximately 10 minutes to the winery where they will spend the night.

Arrival and Departure Details / Times
Arrival and departure times are flexible based on guests’ preferred method of arrival/departure.

Typically, return flights to the United States from Buenos Aires leave late in the evening which offers anglers the ability to have a day of fishing before having to make the drive back to Buenos Aires.

Documents Required

Argentina
Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and other Western European nations do not need a visa for tourist trips of up to ninety days. You will need a valid passport and will have to fill in an ‘arrival card.’ You will then be given a tourist visa stamp for stays of thirty, sixty, or ninety days. Staple the duplicate of your arrival card into your passport as you will need it to leave the country. If you lose it, it’s rarely a serious problem, but you’ll have to fill out a new form at border control. You will also be given a customs declaration form upon entering the country. Duty is not charged on used personal effects, books, and other articles for non-commercial purposes, up to a value of US $300. Make sure you declare any valuable electronic items such as laptop computers, as customs officers can be suspicious that you may be bringing them into the country to sell.

Uruguay
Driving between Argentina and Uruguay is easy. LOL Argentina provides the transfer service and their staff is well versed in traveling between these two countries. When travelers arrive at the Argentina/Uruguay border, they will present their passport to receive a departure stamp from Argentina, and an arrival stamp from Uruguay. Occasionally the officials will perform a vehicle inspection but the total time for crossing the border rarely takes more than 10 minutes. Returning to Argentina is the same process in reverse.

General Information
Throughout the fishing day, anglers will see a variety of water and predominantly fish two at a time from a drifting skiff. Anglers will cast large streamers on 8-weight rods towards the riverbank, targeting the water around rocks, branches, trees, and current breaks. The guide will maneuver the boat with the trolling motor to moderate the speed and distance of the drift, giving anglers their best chance at fishing the structure and hooking a dorado.

Dorado is high on many anglers’ bucket lists, and for good reason. These fish are most known for their vibrant gold color, large head, and sharp teeth. Beyond their appearance, they are aggressive and strong, and they will explosively take a fly and engage anglers in a powerful acrobatic battle that won’t be forgotten.

Boats and Equipment
Guests will spend their time on customized 19’ skiffs designed specifically for this fishery, which include two casting platforms (front and back) as well as Minn Kota trolling motors. Each skiff can accommodate two anglers who will be provided high-end fly-fishing gear (including rods, reels, flies, and all terminal tackle).
