Trip Overview

Since 1958, the veritable “who’s who” in the fly fishing world have visited Deep Water Cay Club. A.J. McClane, Gil Drake, Joe Brooks, and numerous other big names have frequented this private island to search for huge bonefish on over 250 square miles of pristine flats. Since the early days, the Club has become much more than just a simple lodge, with activities and offerings designed to compliment a “standard” flats fishing vacation. A wide selection of activities provide entire families things to enjoy while the most serious anglers in the group wade the flats or take off in a Hell’s Bay skiff for the day. Today, after more than 50 years in business, the Club is better than ever and the fishery remains healthy and productive. The area is loaded with bonefish and Deep Water Cay is home to excellent guides, high-end equipment, and one of the nicest lodge layouts in the Bahamas. Club amenities include a main clubhouse, welcome center, dock and marina area, infinity pool, and a 4,000-foot private airstrip.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Lodging Details
Accommodations at Deep Water Cay are comfortably relaxed and at the same time much nicer than what is normally found at a standard "bonefish operation" in the Bahamas. Individuals or fishing partners typically prefer the Club's oceanfront cabanas. The cabanas feature one-bedroom units with a private bathroom and two full beds. Each cabana has a front porch overlooking the Lodge’s bonefish flat, and each is outfitted with a refrigerator, coffee maker, walk-in closet, and air conditioning. For families, small groups, or those looking for more privacy, private homes are also available on the Cay. The deluxe private homes are more spacious and include full kitchens, sitting and living rooms, dining areas, and wrap-around verandas. There are a variety of different cottages and private houses from which to choose and groups of all sizes can be accommodated.

At Deep Water Cay's epicenter sits the Club House. Sun illuminates the Club House all day long, from morning sunrises in the East to stunning evening sunsets in the West. Dine, socialize, relax, and, above all, share your day's adventures. A collection of photos and articles illustrates Deep Water Cay's rich legacy. As you review the time anglers have spent on the island, one part is clear; from big fish to big smiles, you'll know why visitors fall in love with the island.

Food and Beverages
When it comes to preparing culinary masterpieces, the Club's kitchen staff has no shortage of passion and commitment. Holding experience in International cuisine and grand American steak house styles, they utilize local and seasonal ingredients, and their innovative presentation of the day’s catch is always creative. You can expect a full line-up of traditional island dishes as well as some unexpected and brilliant meals. The chef is happy to accommodate any dietary needs and special requests.

Typical Length of Stay
Trips and packages of any length can be arranged and all trips are completely customized. Anglers can arrive and depart Freeport, Grand Bahama on any day of the week. Call Yellow Dog for details.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
At Deep Water Cay, you’re always on “Island Time.” This means that you can pretty much do whatever you want, whenever you want. And when you want to relax and do nothing, the Club will take care of you. Some guests relax on the white sand beach, others beside the Club's infinity pool. For a relaxing adventure, the Club is happy to arrange a picnic at East End Point, one of the prettiest areas of the Deep Water Cay archipelago. You’ll find a swimming area with a long, white sand beach. It’s the perfect place to swim, snorkel, or look for shells. And when you’ve worked up an appetite, take a break for a gourmet lunch prepared by the Deep Water Cay chef. Another way to experience Deep Water Cay is by kayak or SUP board. It is possible to kayak all the way around the cay on the calm ocean surface, as well as in the lagoons behind the mangrove preserves. Explore it all – coves, mangroves, flats, blue holes and quiet beaches, and get up close and personal to a variety of birds, fish, and mammals.

Internet / Communications
The Club offers Wi-Fi for guests. Most U.S. cell phones will work throughout the area as well.

FISHING

General Information
Deep Water Cay Club is located on a small, private island on the eastern-most shores of Grand Bahama Island. You cannot drive any further east on the island, and in fact, guests take a short boat ride from the main island to reach the Club's private cay. The long-time guide staff works directly from the Club Marina, and typical boat rides to the flats each day range from 15 to 45 minutes.

Much like the bights of Andros Island, this area of Grand Bahama is perfectly situated for fishing optimal tides throughout the day. Since the Club is located in the heart of Big and Little Harbour Cays, Sweetings Cay, Lightbourne and Michael's Cays, there are numerous smaller bights or waterways that connect the northern and southern shores of the tip of Grand Bahama Island. These intricate creeks, lagoons, and bights allow your guide to locate feeding bonefish throughout the day, thus preventing anglers from getting "stuck" fishing in unproductive areas during extreme high and low tides. This maximizes your fishing time when fishing here.

The winds can play a large role in how water moves through these bights, so having experienced guides that know this specific area is vital. The Club guides are true professionals who know the local flats very well. The bights of this area are also large enough to provide protection from the wind no matter the direction.

One of our favorite aspects of a fly fishing vacation is a destination with productive "home flats" to fish early or late in the day; Deep Water Cay Club has great flats located right out the front door. This makes for fun fishing on arrival day to "knock the rust off" your casting, and on other days, allows those who can never seem to get enough out of a guided day to wade on their own looking for tailing fish as the sun sets. If you are visiting DWCC with a non-angler, hitting the home flats for a couple of hours at a time during a non-guided fishing day is a great way to keep everyone happy during your vacation.

Boats and Equipment Required
Anglers fish from Hell’s Bay Professional 17.8s and Marquesa skiffs outfitted with Yamaha four-stroke outboard engines. All boats have removable lean bars, plenty of rod storage, dry storage areas, and very comfortable seats with backrests. These are excellent skiffs and pole in remarkably shallow water. The Club's Pro Shop is fully stocked with the best quality fly gear on the market. You’ll find Sage Rods, Tibor Reels and Rio Fly Lines for purchase or for rent. They also have a great selection of flies, leaders and tippet. If you forget anything at home, they will have it.

“The new ownership has built the finest bonefish lodge in the Bahamas right where it should be — smack dab in the middle of some of the Bahamas' most historically important bonefish and permit flats. You can literally step out the back door in the morning light and catch a bonefish before you get your morning cup of coffee.”
- Ross Purnell (Editor, Fly Fisherman Magazine)

“What a beautiful oasis! A fun, festive Bahamian adventure of chasing bones kept me smiling all week long. I look forward to my next trip full of sunshine and light winds. Watch out Mr. 10 pounder, I'll be back!! Thanks to all for the hospitality.”
