Trip Overview

Ascension Bay's Grand Slam Lodge has established itself as one of the finest lodges and fishing operations in the Yucatan. It is without a doubt the nicest "base camp" in the area for anglers looking to sight cast to permit, bonefish, tarpon, and snook. Located in the small fishing village of Punta Allen, Grand Slam Lodge can provide fly anglers immediate access to the incredible fishing in Sian Ka'an Biosphere, including both Ascension Bay and Espirito Santo Bay. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere encompasses Ascension Bay, Punta Allen, and the surrounding lagoons - all productive fishing areas offering some of the finest flats fishing on the planet. Because of steady regulations and enforcement, Ascension Bay is one of the few places in the world that can back up the claim that fishing improves every year! This is the perfect destination for first-time saltwater anglers as well as more advanced anglers looking for a great variety of species and fishing scenarios.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Lodging Details
There are not many fishing-focused destinations in the Caribbean that offer the high level of comfort presented by Grand Slam Lodge. This is not your typical fishing lodge when it comes to accommodations! Yellow Dog rates this new destination very high on our list for non-anglers traveling with anglers. We promise that some guests will have a difficult time getting out of bed each morning to go fishing, due to the comfortable mattresses, high thread-count sheets, and oversized pillows. The rooms are spacious, and each has a huge private bathroom, spa-quality jet bath, large waterfall-style shower, thermostat controlled A/C, phone, 46" flat screen TV with local cable access, DVD player, iPod dock, and spacious sitting area. All rooms have a semi-private deck overlooking the water, complete with rod racks and comfortable outdoor furniture. The duplex-style accommodations have four units per building and flank the main lodge, which is the social epicenter of Grand Slam Lodge.

There is plenty of shade from the mature swaying palm trees that are prominent throughout the property. The beach is lined with a number of raised platforms, each complete with two lounge chairs and a table for your drink and beach supplies. The ocean swimming is decent, and while much of the bottom is covered with turtle grass, there are a few white, sandy patches that are perfect for swimming. There are also coral heads and small reefs that are ideal for snorkeling right from the property.

Food and Beverages
Grand Slam Lodge features a full service restaurant and bar – one of the finest eating and drinking establishments in the area.  All meals are cooked to order from a full menu, and all dietary requests and special orders can be accommodated. The bar at Grand Slam is one of the most unique of any fishing lodge we have ever visited. Suspended “bar stools” hang down from the ceiling and line the front of the bar, creating a relaxing, laid-back environment for enjoying the coldest beer and best margaritas in the Yucatan. A large deck area with oversized couches that overlooks the beach and the water is a popular place to gather after your day on the water to share stories and make plans for the following fishing day. For anglers, breakfast and lunch are served each day in the restaurant, and a full cooler lunch is packed for your day on the water.

Typical Length of Stay
Although the standard package at Grand Slam is a seven (7) nights / six (6) fishing days week, packages and itineraries of any length can be accommodated. Anglers can arrive and depart on any day of the week.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
Grand Slam sits on a quiet and private beach, complete with raised lounge platforms, beach chairs, and a pool. The ocean that lies before the lodge is perfect for snorkeling. Non-angling guests will feel comfortable and well cared for and will be offered a variety of activities including bird watching, snorkeling, exploring Mayan ruins, beach combing, and just plain relaxing. The lodge itself is located in one of the world's largest protected wild areas, the Sian Ka'an, Biosphere Reserve. This pristine reserve covers over 1.3 million acres and has been designated by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site. The abundance of marine and wild life in Sian Ka'an is hard to imagine until you have seen it for yourself. You can find over 325 species of birds, four different types of marine turtles ( Loggerheads, Green Sea Turtles, Hawksbills, and Leatherbacks) and fish species too numerous to name. We can also arrange for a private boat tour of the Boca Paila Lagoon and a day in the quaint tourist village of Tulum. You may also walk down the beach to Punta Allen, which offers minimal retail opportunities.

Internet / Communications
Wi-Fi is available free of charge to Lodge guests. Depending on your service plan, some U.S. cell phones may work in the Cancun, Tulum, and even the Punta Allen areas.

FISHING

General Information
Whether you are seeking a well-balanced trip that offers a diversity of flats species, or if you want to focus on hunting permit in one of the top permit fishing destinations in the world, Grand Slam Lodge can accommodate your needs. Focus on the area’s plentiful bonefish or the wadeable bonefish flats located only minutes from the lodge. You can also opt to take a longer run into the larger area lagoons and expansive backcountry system for tarpon or snook. Sweeping permit flats are located throughout Ascension Bay and the Boca Paila lagoon system – home to some of the most productive permit fishing in the world. For anglers who do not want to make long runs in the boat, the guides can fish flats very close to the lodge or venture further into the backcountry for those seeking to fish areas that see little angling pressure.

Overall, Grand Slam is one of the finest destinations in the entire Caribbean for anglers seeking the big three of flats species - bones, permit and tarpon. The bonefish are plentiful, average two to three pounds, and love to eat flies. Anglers will find bones tailing in skinny water during the lower tides and nice schools of fish moving into deeper water as the tide rises. You will be wade fishing most of the time for bones, while the permit, jack, barracuda, tarpon and snook fishing will be done from the boat.

During calm conditions, the guides will locate permit from the pangas and have you stalk tailing fish by wading for a closer shot. Permit in the area average around 10 to 15 pounds. Larger permit well into the 30-pound range are found throughout the year. Juvenile tarpon between 10 and 30 pounds are common throughout the area, and larger fish can be found throughout the spring and summer months. There are dozens of tarpon and snook areas adjacent to the flats and areas of dead fall and mangroves are especially productive.

Best of all, the lodge's location allows guides to position anglers on protected flats during challenging weather. Inland characteristics of the famous Ascension Bay flats and the Boca Paila lagoon create plenty of areas that can be excellent for fishing regardless of the conditions. Whether you are fishing "Permit Alley," Tres Marias, or any of the other famous areas close to the lodge, the guides will have you on the best waters at the given time that you’re there. And while many fisheries throughout the Caribbean are tide-dependent, we have found Ascension Bay to be one of the more consistent destinations for bones, permit, snook, and juvenile tarpon.

This is primarily due to the fact that there is an immense amount of habitat and the wind regularly pushes the water around the large bay, simulating moving tides. When the seasonal winds change direction, the fish access different lagoons and flats due to this shift in water volume. What does this mean to an angler? It means that you do not have to live and die by the tide charts and the moon phases for your next trip! The experienced guides of Grand Slam can typically find your target species any time of year and offer a variety of fishing scenarios.

Boats and Equipment
Boats used by the lodge are 23-foot Mexican super pangas that comfortably accommodate two fishermen and a guide. The boats are roomy and clean, with large, uncluttered casting decks. If possible, anglers should plan on bringing all equipment such as rods, reels, and fly lines with them. The lodge does have some demo and rental rods available, but tackle in the area is limited. The lodge also has a basic selection of flies, leaders and tippet for sale in their small gift and tackle shop.

A Clarification and Special Note About the “Grand Slam Lodge”
Since this “Grand Slam Lodge” opened in the Punta Allen area in 2008, there has been some confusion regarding the name of the new operation (Grand Slam Lodge) and its similarity to the name of another pre-existing guest house also operating in the same area (the Club Grand Slam).  The Grand Slam Lodge that Yellow Dog represents and works with is a large hotel and lodge operation located on the outskirts of the village Punta Allen. It is a large, full-service hotel and fishing operation situated on a very large piece of property with one of the best beaches on the entire Peninsula. “Club Grand Slam” is a totally separate operation and entity that is located within the village of Punta Allen.  This operation is owned by Capt Greg Rahe and is not affiliated or aligned in any way with Yellow Dog. We apologize for any confusion stemming from the similarities of the two names, but – since we do not own or operate the lodges ourselves – we cannot control what different operations choose to call themselves! Thank you.

Client Testimonials

"This trip was one of the best experiences of our lives. Everything about the trip exceeded our already lofty expectations. We will always cherish the wonderful people we met and the time we spent there. Thank you again, Jim and Ian, for such a fantastic experience."
- Michael C. (Houston, TX)

"The whole program at Grand Slam is top notch. In fact, I have not experienced too many fishing lodges with such comfortable rooms. If the fishing was not so good I would have spent a day relaxing around the lodge."
- Ian D. (Bozeman, MT)
