Trip Overview

Situated in the middle of the 1.3 million-acre Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Pesca Maya Lodge offers a great fishing program, good food, and one of the best values found anywhere in the world of saltwater flats fishing. Pesca Maya first opened it's doors in January 1996, and has since established itself as one of the Yucatan's most popular fishing destinations. The property is located 90 miles south of Cancun on a long, narrow strip of barrier beach that is virtually surrounded by the waters of Ascension Bay and the Boca Paila Lagoon. If you’re a beginning saltwater angler, Ascension Bay is one of the best places in the world to catch your first bonefish. For more seasoned anglers, this is one of the world’s best locations to target permit with a fly. With hundreds of square miles of flats, it is not uncommon to see bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, and barracuda all in the same day.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Lodging Details
Pesca Maya features a number of accommodation options, with the primary operations focusing on rooms in the recently-renovated Robinson and SeaClusion House. All rooms are nicely decorated, clean, and comfortable. Each features a private bathroom, hot and cold water, air conditioning, and screened porches and windows, allowing for a constant flow of ocean breezes. The Lodge is located on an untouched, solitary white sand beach, surrounded by turquoise waters and a magnificent coral reef that starts only 90 yards from the beach. The new main palapa is a spacious building serving as Pesca Maya's hub, with its bar, dinning area, small tackle shop, and the main common area. Here, you will eat all meals, enjoy cold beers and frosty margaritas on the porch, tie flies at the "community" tying bench, and swap stories with fellow guests and anglers.

Food and Beverages
Most meals are served home-style, with a breakfast buffet, do-it-yourself lunches, and an extensive dinner menu that changes nightly. You can enjoy an American-style breakfast, a cooler full of food for your lunch on the water, and a dinner menu that includes a variety soups, salads, vegetables, fish, steak, shrimp, fresh lobster, and chicken. Beverages and drinks include purified water, sodas, beer, wine on the table, and a variety of cocktails including margaritas, rum-and-cokes, daiquiris, and more. If you desire imported liquors or a particular brand, feel free to bring your own bottle along. They will serve it to you at the bar at no extra charge!

Typical Length of Stay
Packages and itineraries of any length can be accommodated and anglers can arrive and depart on any day of the week. Please contact Yellow Dog Flyfishing for more details and specific rates.

Non-Angling Activities and Options
While Pesca Maya is primarily a fishing-focused operation, non-angling guests will feel comfortable and well cared for. The lodge can easily arrange for a variety of activities, including birdwatching, snorkeling, exploring Mayan ruins, beachcombing, and just plain relaxing. The lodge itself is located in one of the world's largest protected wild areas, the Sian Ka'an, Biosphere Reserve. This pristine reserve covers over 1.3 million acres and has been designated by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site. The abundance of marine and wildlife in Sian Ka'an is hard to imagine until you have seen it for yourself. Found here are over 325 species of birds, four different types of marine turtles (loggerheads, green sea turtles, hawksbills, and leatherbacks), and fish species too numerous to name.

Internet / Communications
Wi-Fi is available free of charge to lodge guests. Depending on your service plan, some U.S. cell phones may work in the Cancun, Tulum, and even the Punta Allen areas.

FISHING

General Information
Pesca Maya offers the best of both fly fishing worlds – a short boat ride to the productive flats of Ascension Bay or a quick trip to the more secluded lagoons that surround it. Whether you are wading expansive flats for schools of bonefish and permit, or casting in lagoons for tarpon, snook or barracuda, this is the ideal fishery for novice and seasoned saltwater anglers alike. If you’re a beginning saltwater angler, Ascension Bay is a one of the best places in the world to take your first bonefish on a fly. For more seasoned anglers, this is one of the best locations on the planet to take a permit on a fly.

With hundreds of square miles of flats, it is not uncommon to see bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, and barracuda all in the same day. Due to these strong resident fish numbers and seasonal migrations of snook and tarpon, there have arguably been more Grand Slams and Super Grand Slams (a tarpon, bonefish, permit and snook all in the same day) caught here than anywhere else in the world.

The “typical” conditions that one encounters when fly fishing Ascension Bay are as close to perfect as a saltwater angler can hope for. Bright sun, white sand flats, and crystal-clear water create outstanding conditions for sighting and stalking fish. Even when the wind is blowing hard, the guides can usually find a lee in the mangrove-lined lagoons which offers easier conditions for fly casting. Whether wading the warm sandy flats or fishing from the boat, Ascension Bay is the ideal destination for the saltwater flats angler.

Boats and Equipment
Classic 23-foot Mexican pangas provide comfortable water transport – particularly in strong winds and rough seas – and a stable casting platform for fly fishing. These pangas are easy to pole in shallow water and have for decades served the region's fishermen and guides. These boats can accommodate two fishermen, a guide, and an apprentice guide. The boats are roomy and comfortable with large, clean casting decks. If possible, anglers should plan on bringing all equipment such as rods, reels, and fly lines with them. The Lodge does have some demo and rental rods available, and also has a decent selection of flies, leaders, and tippet for sale in the small gift and tackle shop. Yellow Dog recommends that guests travel with their own gear.

TRAVEL DETAILS

How To Get There
All guests should book flights to Cancun International Airport (CUN), an easy airport to reach with direct daily flights from most cities in the U.S. and abroad.

Arrival and Departure Details / Times
It is very important to schedule your arrival time into Cancun International Airport (CUN) BEFORE 2:30 PM and also plan to book your return flights for AFTER 12:00 PM. This is very important to ensure for a smooth transfer to and from the lodge and the airport. Pesca Maya schedules one transfer per day, usually departing Cancun around 1:30 PM. If you arrive early (11:00 am for example), you may have to wait for other guests to arrive before leaving the airport or pay a special transfer surcharge. If there are other arrivals later that day you will depart Cancun immediately. However guests arriving to Cancun after 3:00 PM, may be charged a special transfer surcharge. Special transfer surcharge rate is $300. The driving portion of the transfer is around two hours. The remainder of the transfer is typically by boat through the Boca Paila Lagoon. This boat ride is approximately one hour-long, and passes directly through "Permit Alley."

On departure day, breakfast is served at 5:30 AM and all guests depart at 6:00 AM in order to get to the airport for midday flights. Please keep this in mind when booking your departure flights. And again, do not schedule your departing flight before 12:00 noon. The Cancun airport does require you to be at the airport 2 hours prior to departure.

Documents Required
All U.S. citizens are required to have a valid passport that does not expire within six (6) months of trips dates. Please be sure that your passport has at least two blank, unstamped pages remaining in back, and that it is not torn, delaminated, or damaged in any way. No visas or inoculations are required for U.S. citizens. A Mexican departure tax is payable at the airport when leaving Mexico. Some airlines include this as a prepaid part of your ticket.

Minors Travelling To Mexico Without Both Parents
If you are planning on traveling with minors, remember that all children under 18 years of age entering Mexico accompanied by only one parent or legal guardian must have a notarized letter of consent from the other parent stating the child/children have his/her permission to enter the country. Single parents need a notarized documentation of divorce decree or death certificate of spouse. Minors unaccompanied by either parent require a notarized letter of consent signed by both parents. OTHER INFO

Two guides per boat?
At Pesca Maya, a head guide and a young apprentice will normally be assigned to each panga. Both have very good eyes. This formula helps very much when wading, as each angler will have his or her own personal guide. When learning to cast or spot fish, one guide poles and the other is with the angler at the casting platform. This formula is also helpful when positioning the boat or when you leave the boat to wade and do not want to have to re-trace the water you have already covered (the apprentice guide will bring the boat to wherever you are and pick you up). Many of Pesca Maya's customers have come to appreciate this system very much. Please note that this two-guide program does not apply to summer months or to trips booked under special discount rates.

Seasons at Pesca Maya
Pesca Maya is open year-round. While the traditional "peak season" runs from March to June, more and more anglers are taking advantage of medium and low season discounts (10% - 20%) during other times of the year. Below is a brief description of the seasons at Pesca Maya.

Fall Season
More and more anglers are taking advantage of the low rates and uncrowded Fall conditions. October and November can sometimes be fantastic at Pesca Maya, with beautiful sunny days, moderate breezes, and low winds. Plenty of local bonefish, permit, and some baby tarpon, plus larger migrant tarpon still inhabit the area. When the weather is good, this is a perfect time to fish. Rain may fall for short periods throughout the day. It’s also the tail end of hurricane season, so we strongly recommend a travel insurance policy for all fall trips. Yellow Dog offers a 10% discount during the month of November.

Winter Season
December, January, and February can be dry months in this part of the Caribbean, offering sunny and warm conditions. Plenty of local bonefish, permit, tarpon, and barracuda are around. Winter is obviously a perfect time to run away from the cold weather of North America to fish the Caribbean. This time of the year can occasionally be windy if cold fronts from the north pass through the region. Yellow Dog offers a 10% discount during the months of December and January (excluding the Christmas Season, December 18 - January 4).

Spring Season
March, April, May, and June are peak season for fishing the area. It is generally accepted that this time of the year weather is better, with a lot of sun and manageable winds. Sometimes, however, heavy winds and rain can be a factor, especially during early Spring. This is a great time of the year to focus on permit!

Summer Season
If you want the best bet for the best time of year to fish without wind, summer is the time to do it. Flat and crystal-clear water, plenty of migratory tarpon, and hungry, happy fish. The average temperature is higher than during the rest of the year, but usually manageable. Early summer is generally the rainy season, which means that you might have some clouds and rain. These conditions will usually come and go in about one hour. You might want to take advantage of our 20% discount during the Summer and early Fall!

Ascension Bay Day Trips
If you're visiting the Yucatan on a family vacation, or if your fishing time in the region is limited, Pesca Maya offers fantastic day trips that will still allow you to fish Ascension Bay. These trips are all-inclusive with transportation from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Playacar to the lodge and back. You will generally leave your hotel early on the morning of your trip and return that evening in time for dinner. If you are interested, please call Yellow Dog for more information and reservations.

Client Testimonials

"This was the best saltwater trip of my life in terms of the opportunities for different species and the number of fish I actually caught. The guides were knowledgeable, helpful and accommodating, and the overall experience was great. Thanks Yellow Dog!"
- Evan F. (Reno, NV)

"The fishing at Pesca Maya was first rate. Of equal importance, however, was the overall environment and experience. Great staff, comfortable quarters, fine food, laid back atmosphere and the most scenic bar in the world! Unlike many booking agencies, Yellow Dog added value to this trip. You were concerned, prepared and made it better. Thanks!"
- James S. (Bainbridge Island, WA)

"We had the trip of a lifetime. Having just started fishing, I was overjoyed to catch so many bonefish (mostly due to great guiding) We caught bones, barracuda, and tarpon. The world class fishing, the great lodge, and the spectacular biosphere setting that is Ascension Bay - the trip was everything that we hoped for!"
- Laura S. (United Kingdom)

"I would like to thank you for setting up our trip to Pesca Maya. It was the best trip I have been on ever! Just what we were looking for - nothing fancy, very secluded, and no people. The people at the lodge were friendly and the service was excellent. The rooms were quiet and cozy. Our guides Dawrin and Jesus were perfect. We never got skunked, and they were great working with my wife. They did everything they could to get us onto fish, and we never fished the same place twice. We will be booking another trip for next year to be sure."
- Mike J. (Thornton, C)

"I just returned night before last from my fishing trip to Pesca Maya. It was everything I thought it would be. My first flats fishing trip, and I had my first bonefish within the first hour of fishing. My best day was 11 bonefish. Thanks to Bob Meade and the rest of the Yellow Dog crew for an excellent job."
- David K. (Maple Grove, MN)

"What a wonderful place - great guides, food, and lodging. I'd definitely go back!"
– Charles R. (Spring, TX)
