Trip Overview

Strategically situated on the banks of the Skeena River, Spey Lodge offers steelhead fishing trips to the unlimited availability of fly-friendly waters of the lower Skeena watershed – home to the largest runs of wild fish in North America. Further to the north lies Spey Lodge’s sister operation Boundary Lodge, a slightly smaller lodge built on the banks of the Bell-Irving River. While Spey Lodge is the “base” operation, Boundary was designed and constructed as a remote, exclusive steelhead “out-lodge” that  caters to only four rods per week from September through November. The season at Spey Lodge begins in mid-March with the arrival of spring steelhead. Throughout the summer, anglers can catch five different species of sea-bright Pacific salmon in addition to resident trout. Starting in late July, Spey Lodge offers some of the best steelhead fishing in the world, action that continues into the fall. The target species and the rivers fished vary from month to month, but the techniques stay relatively the same. Swinging wet flies with floating lines and light wet-tips is always most effective. You can also skate dry flies to large steelhead, catching fish on the surface that can easily exceed 20 pounds!

The staff at Spey and Boundary Lodges have created an excellent small-lodge atmosphere, and all meals are enjoyed family-style after long days on the water. Guests are treated to a great selection of home cooking at both lodges.

Typical Length of Stay
A standard package is a six (6) nights / five (5) fishing days (Monday to Saturday). Change over days can be adjusted. Contact Yellow Dog for more details.

FISHING

General Information
The Lodge begins its season in mid-March with the arrival of the spring steelhead. Throughout the summer, anglers can catch five different species of sea-bright Pacific salmon in addition to resident trout. Starting the end of July, Spey Lodge offers some of the best steelhead fishing in the world, with the action continuing into the fall. Late summer and early fall brings some of the best dry fly steelheading on earth, which can at times last until mid-November. The target species and the rivers fished vary from month to month, but the techniques stay relatively the same. Spey Lodge, of course, specializes in the use of Spey rods (two handed fly rods). A single-handed eight-weight rod will work just fine most of the time, but with the salmon often exceeding thirty pounds and the steelhead sometimes exceeding twenty pounds, the risk of being under-gunned is always there. A Spey rod balances the odds in your favor. Spey Lodge will provide you with on-the-water lessons in all aspects of Spey casting. Swinging wet flies with floating lines and light wet-tips is almost always most effective. You can also skate dry flies to large steelhead, catching fish on the surface that can easily exceed 20 pounds! For those who are interested, the benefits of Spey casting are taught and encouraged by the experienced guides to guests of all skill levels.

Boats and Equipment
The lodges utilize a collection of rafts and aluminum jet boats equipped with Yamaha motors. The lodges offer a full line-up of Spey equipment, which can be used by clients.

TRAVEL DETAILS

How To Get There
Your final flight destination is Terrace, British Columbia (YXT), which can be accessed via a number of daily commercial flights from Vancouver, B.C.

Arrival and Departure Details / Times
Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to the Lodge. Spey Lodge is conveniently located just 15 minutes from the airport. The shuttle to Boundary Lodge from Spey Lodge is a little over three hours.

Documents Required
A passport is required for U.S. citizens to enter Canada. Anglers are also required to purchase a British Columbia freshwater fishing license. We do recommend doing that online prior to arrival at the lodge. You can purchase that general freshwater license online online by clicking this link. Depending on the fishery for the day you may have to purchase an additional classified waters permit and that can be done while at the lodge.

Drunk Driving or other Criminal Record
Anyone with a criminal record (including a drunk driving conviction) may be excluded from Canada. A waiver of exclusion may be issued but several weeks are required and a processing fee must be paid. Contact the Canadian Embassy or a Canadian Consulate in the U.S. for more information.
