Description
What size rod and reel combination do you prefer in this situation?
My go-to set up is a 9 ft. 9 wt. 4 pc. rod. Personally, I fish the Scott Sector 909/4 with either a Hatch 9+ reel or a Seigler MF Reel .Â
When targeting permit what are the most important attributes you're looking for in a rod? (i.e. durability, accuracy, feel, etc.)Â
I want speed when it comes to delivery. I don’t mean speed in the action of the rod, but rather the ability to quickly load and deliver the cast. With permit, getting the fly where it needs to be quickly – without multiple false casts – is everything. Speed, accuracy and distance all matter with permit fishing: usually in that order.  Â
What about the reel? (drag system, weight, durability, balance, capacity, etc.)
There are a lot of good saltwater reels out there these days. My current favorites are Seigler, Hatch, Mako, Tibor, and some of the Abel models. (My all-time favorite reels are the original Charlton Reels built by Jack Charlton, but those are hard to find these days!) Well-built reels that are designed for the saltwater – with excellent drag systems and the smoothest start-up inertia possible – are ideal for permit.
How does your fly line's taper pair with this rod, and how does it influence your cast? (i.e. delicate presentations, turning over heavy flies, carrying heavy lines, etc.)
I am a Scientific Anglers fan for my saltwater fishing. The Amplitude Smooth series have been my go to for the past several years, and recently I have been fishing the new Magnitude floating clear tip lines. I personally believe that these are true game-changers when it comes to chasing permit.
Who is this outfit for, and why?
For the angler that wants the very best and is willing to invest in a premium set-up that gives every advantage possible when chasing permit.
