Description
Schlappen feathers are long, webby, and exceptionally soft feathers taken from the area between the saddle and tail of a rooster. Prized in fly tying for their natural movement, these feathers feature dense, flowing fibers that pulse and breathe in the water—making them ideal for creating lifelike motion in larger patterns. Schlappen typically ranges from 5–7 inches in length, offering generous fiber length with minimal taper, and is available in a wide range of dyed and natural colors for freshwater and saltwater use.
Unlike stiffer saddle or neck hackle, schlappen fibers remain mobile even at slow retrieve speeds, making them a go-to material for flies that rely on underwater animation. Feathers are usually sold as loose patches or strung bundles, with consistent stem softness for easy wrapping and tying versatility.
Best Uses:- Streamers & Predator Flies – Adds soft, flowing movement for trout, bass, muskie, and other big-game patterns.
- Saltwater Patterns – Ideal for baitfish patterns such as deceivers
- Spey & Intruder Flies – Commonly used as hackle or collars for steelhead and salmon patterns where long, webby fibers are key.
- Tails, Collars & Accents – Provides length, bulk, and motion without stiffness
