Pliers/Hemostats

Both tools are used for handling flies, hooks, and fish, but they serve slightly different purposes. Hemostats are lightweight, scissor-like tools with locking jaws designed for de-barbing hooks and removing flies with more care. Pliers are generally heavier-duty, with stronger jaws and cutters made for saltwater or big-game species where more leverage is needed. In certain instances such as handling species like bonefish or triggerfish with small mouths, hemostats can be very helpful as opposed to pliers.

Saltwater species like tarpon, permit, and giant trevally have strong jaws and can be difficult to unhook safely. Pliers provide extra reach and strength, allowing anglers to remove hooks quickly while keeping hands away from sharp teeth or crushing jaws. Most saltwater pliers also feature cutters that can handle heavy fluorocarbon, wire, or even backing in an emergency.

Definitely. Any tool that gets repeatedly wet should be rinsed and dried after use. For saltwater fishing, it’s especially important to rinse pliers in freshwater and occasionally apply a light oil to prevent corrosion. High-quality pliers made from anodized aluminum or stainless steel are built to withstand these conditions, but regular care extends their life.
