Orvis Reels

Founded in 1856 by Charles F. Orvis in Manchester, Vermont, the Orvis Company began with a simple mission: to provide superior fly-fishing equipment backed by exceptional customer service. Over the decades, Orvis grew into a trusted leader in fly fishing and wingshooting while also expanding into travel, apparel, fine gifts, and innovative products for dogs. Privately owned by the Perkins family since 1965, the company is still headquartered in southwestern Vermont, with major operations in Virginia and the United Kingdom. Today, Orvis employs about 1,500 people and is recognized as an international, multi-channel retailer.

Orvis fly reels are now predominantly manufactured in Asia, with many entry- and mid-tier models produced in China, while some of their more premium reels are fabricated in South Korea.

Orvis uses different drag systems depending on the reel model. Their classic Battenkill reels feature a click-and-pawl drag, which is simple, lightweight, and well suited for trout fishing. Many of their modern reels, such as the Hydros and Mirage series, use sealed disc drags made from carbon and stainless steel to provide smooth, reliable performance with little maintenance. The Mirage series in particular incorporates a ball-and-ramp mechanism within its sealed carbon-and-stainless-steel disc drag, allowing for precise adjustments and powerful stopping strength, making it a favorite for both freshwater and saltwater anglers.

Orvis fly reels are backed by a lifetime guarantee to the original owner, covering defects in materials and workmanship. If a reel is found to have a manufacturing defect, Orvis will repair or replace it at no charge for labor or parts.
