Mako Reels

Mako Reel Company traces its origins to aerospace engineer Jack Charlton, who applied his precision machining expertise to fly reel design in the early 1980s by launching Charlton Outdoor Technologies. Charlton’s reels featured innovations like a sealed drag system, interchangeable spools, and durable Type III anodized finishes, earning them a reputation for quality and collector value. In 1993, Jack founded the Charlton Reel Company in Burlington, Washington, before briefly partnering with StreamWorks and later being acquired by 3M in 2001. After regaining independence in 2005, Jack and his wife Judy rebranded as Mako Reel Company. Upon Jack’s passing in 2011, Judy took the helm until 2015, when Mark Vorobik took over, followed by Nick Garcia assuming leadership in 2018 and relocating operations to Bellingham, Washington in 2020.

Mako reels use a sealed multi-disc carbon-fiber drag system that provides smooth and powerful resistance. The drag is fully sealed with O-rings and lip seals to block salt, grit, and moisture. A one-turn lock-to-lock knob allows precise and repeatable settings, while the system automatically compensates for wear.

Mako Reels come with a lifetime warranty for the original owner, covering any manufacturing defects in materials or workmanship. The company will repair or replace defective reels at its discretion. This warranty does not cover indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, and any modifications that alter the reel’s calibrated settings may void the warranty.
