Golden Dorado Flies

Most dorado flies range from 4–8 inches long, tied on hooks from size 2/0 up to 6/0. Their large size helps trigger the predatory instincts of dorado, which commonly feed on baitfish like sábalo in South American rivers.

Popular patterns include bulky streamers, deceivers, Puglisi-style baitfish, and topwater flies like poppers and mouse imitations. Flies with deer hair or synthetic heads that create turbulence in the water are especially effective at provoking aggressive strikes.

Golden dorado are aggressive, hard-hitting predators with sharp teeth and powerful jaws. Flies for dorado are tied on extra-strong hooks, often with wire bite tippets in mind, and built with durable materials that can withstand repeated strikes. They tend to be large, flashy, and designed to push water for maximum attraction.

Because the flies are large and the fish are extremely powerful, dorado are best pursued with 8–10 weight rods, large-arbor reels with strong drags, and wire bite leaders to prevent bite-offs.
