Bonefish Flies

A good bonefish fly lands softly, sinks quickly, and rides hook-point up to avoid snagging on turtle grass or coral. It should imitate the small shrimp, crabs, or baitfish bonefish naturally feed on, with just enough movement or flash to draw attention without spooking wary fish. The best bonefish flies are tied in sizes and weights matched to the depth and clarity of the flat—lighter beadchain for skinny water, heavier dumbbells for deeper flats—so the presentation looks natural in any condition.

Most are tied on size 4–8 hooks, but smaller and larger flies are used depending on the fishery. Smaller patterns are commonly used in clear, shallow water for spooky fish, while slightly larger patterns work in deeper flats or for trophy fish.

Staple patterns include the Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, Bonefish Bitters, Spawning Shrimp, and EP shrimp.

A good rule of thumb is to match the bottom you are fishing over. Natural tans, olives, and whites are best.

Bonefish are typically fished with 7–9 weight rods, saltwater reels with smooth drags, and fluorocarbon leaders.
