Travel often exposes your gear to unpredictable conditions—whether it’s a sudden downpour, spray from boat rides, or luggage sitting on wet docks or runways. A waterproof pack protects critical gear like passports, electronics, cameras, and fly boxes, giving you peace of mind when you’re far from home and replacements aren’t easy to find.

Absolutely. Waterproof packs are especially useful in saltwater environments where gear is constantly exposed to spray and splashes. Look for corrosion-resistant zippers and hardware, and rinse your pack with fresh water after each trip to extend its life.

While waterproof packs offer unmatched protection, there are a few downsides to consider. Because they use thicker materials, welded seams, and specialized zippers, they tend to be heavier than standard water-resistant packs. Waterproof zippers can also feel stiff and harder to open or close, especially in cold conditions, and roll-top closures take more time to access. Since the fabric is non-porous, these packs lack breathability and can feel warmer against your back in hot climates. Interior organization is often limited to a single large compartment in order to maintain waterproof integrity, and the advanced materials and construction usually make them more expensive than traditional packs.
