A non-flash, salt-safe anodized finish helps keep the reel understated on bright flats while protecting it from harsh conditions.

From a destination-travel standpoint, the Zane Carbon is best positioned as a versatile flats reel rather than Hardy’s most extreme big-game option. Its strengths are lightweight construction, fast large-arbor line recovery, a sealed drag, and quick, controlled drag adjustment. The smaller sizes are natural choices for bonefish and redfish, while the 10000 and 12000 extend the platform into permit and tarpon fishing.

Best All-Around Saltwater Fly Reel: The Hardy Fortuna Regent is Hardy’s heavy-duty saltwater reel, designed for demanding destination fisheries where drag strength, line capacity, and reliability matter more than minimizing weight. It is the natural step up from the Zane Carbon for anglers targeting powerful species such as permit, tarpon, giant trevally, tuna, and other big-game fish.
