Crab Flies

Natural colors like tan, olive, brown, and cream are staples, blending in with sand or turtle grass.

Most crab flies are tied on hooks from size 2–6. Larger versions are used for permit and stronger species, while smaller versions are effective for bonefish in skinny water.

A good crab fly sinks quickly, rides hook-point up to avoid snags, and has a broad, flat profile that mimics the look of a real crab scuttling along the bottom. Subtle movement from rubber legs or fibers helps bring the pattern to life, while weighted eyes ensure the fly lands correctly and maintains a natural stance. Colors should match the local bottom—tan, olive, or brown for turtle grass and sand flats, with a touch of contrast like orange or pink to act as a strike trigger for species like permit. Durability is also key, since crab flies are often fished around coral, grass, or shell beds where flies take a beating.
