Trophy Trout Experience

August 18, 25

Few destinations in the world rival the opportunities presented by combining a trip to both Jurassic Lake and Tierra del Fuego. Jurassic Lake is renowned for producing the largest rainbow trout on earth, with anglers regularly encountering fish in the 10–20+ pound class. Further south, the windswept rivers of Tierra del Fuego, most famously the Rio Grande, are home to the planet’s most prolific runs of sea-run brown trout, providing anglers with a completely different but equally rewarding experience.

Why A Combo Trip?

Both Jurassic Lake and Tierra del Fuego are among the most remote and remarkable fisheries in the world, requiring a significant investment of time and travel to access. Once you’ve made the commitment to reach southern Argentina, combining the two into a single itinerary ensures you maximize the return on that investment. Rather than choosing between giant rainbows or sea-run browns, anglers can experience both of these once-in-a-lifetime fisheries in a single trip.

Jurassic Lake sits in a barren, wind-swept landscape that feels otherworldly, while the rivers of Tierra del Fuego flow across the southernmost reaches of the continent, closer to Antarctica than to Buenos Aires. These are not easy places to reach—but that remoteness is precisely what makes them so special. By pairing the destinations, anglers can experience two completely different environments and fisheries on the same journey.

Who Is This Trip For?

This combination trip is designed for fishing-focused anglers willing to journey to one of the most remote corners of the world in pursuit of extraordinary trout. It is best suited for intermediate to advanced anglers who are comfortable fishing in challenging conditions—whether that means contending with the sometimes relentless winds on Jurassic Lake or long days swinging flies on the Rio Grande. At the same time, both destinations offer excellent accommodations, allowing anglers to relax and recover in comfort despite the rugged and isolated settings.

Fishing Details

At Jurassic Lake (Lago Strobel), the focus is on catching some of the largest rainbow trout found anywhere in the world. The lake and its inlet river are crystal clear, and fish are often seen cruising the shoreline. Anglers can expect trout averaging 6-10 pounds, with regular encounters in the 15–20+ pound class. Fishing is primarily done with terrestrial patterns, nymphs, and streamers, all depending on the season and current conditions.

In Tierra del Fuego, anglers target sea-run brown trout that migrate into the Rio Grande. These fish are known for their size and strength, often running 8–15 pounds with legitimate chances at trout over 20 pounds. The fishing techniques vary on the Rio Grande and many anglers prefer to fish a two-handed rod. The river is not large, however, and single-handed rods can also easily be used. Anglers fish a variety of different flies for the sea-runs, including small nymphs, streamers, and – during certain months of the year – large, skated dry flies.

Yellow Dog partners with multiple lodges in both regions, all of which can be combined into seamless multi-leg itineraries. Trips can begin at either destination, with a direct flight available between the regional airports of El Calafate and Ushuaia. Stays in Tierra del Fuego are always week-long packages, and this is also the most common format for Jurassic Lake. However, depending on season and availability, shorter stays at Jurassic Lake may be possible.

Due to the custom nature of combination packages, rates and inclusions/exclusions vary by programs and length of stay. If you would like to learn more, Please Contact Yellow Dog for details.
