Hatch Reels
Hatch Outdoors fly reels are among the finest in the world with impeccable machining, unique design, signature sealed drag cartridges, and a lifetime of uncompromising performance. The Iconic is full of feature improvements which have resulted in the smoothest, lightest, and most durable Hatch fly reel to date.
Why Anglers Trust Hatch Fly Reels
Anglers trust Hatch because the company was founded with a clear objective: build fly reels that would set a higher standard for the industry. Since 2003, Hatch has continued to push reel design and manufacturing forward through innovative products, advanced machining, and an uncompromising approach to materials and construction.
As a family-owned and operated business, Hatch maintains a hands-on commitment to quality throughout the manufacturing process. Its reels are built from high-grade materials and machined with precision to deliver the strength, durability, and dependable performance serious anglers expect.
That same focus on innovation has extended beyond reels to award-winning products such as Hatch’s Nomad Pliers and Nippers.
Which Hatch Fly Reel Is Right for You?
Best All-Around Fly Reel: The Hatch Iconic is the current evolution of Hatch’s signature reel design, built around improved sealing, greater structural stability, smoother drag performance, and long-term durability. Every Iconic reel is made in Southern California.
The reel retains Hatch’s recognizable six-fin window pattern, but updates the design with a reshaped drag knob, revised branding, and a bright-dip finish that highlights the machined surfaces while preserving the depth of the matte anodizing.
One of the Iconic’s most important construction features is its one-piece reel body and reel seat. Hatch machines the body from a single piece rather than attaching the reel foot separately, reducing the risk of the seat loosening because of galvanic corrosion.
The drag system is now integrated directly into the reel body rather than housed in a separate cassette. According to Hatch, this decreases axial runout and produces a more stable, solid reel. Improved concentricity and the removal of unnecessary components also eliminate potential water-entry points and improve sealing.
A new carbon-filled drag material dissipates heat more efficiently and creates a smoother feel. Hatch describes it as the smoothest drag system the company has produced.
Keep Your Hatch Reel Performing Its Best

Do not soak the reel or allow it to sit in still water.
-
Never remove or disassemble the drag system.

Routine maintenance should be minimal when the reel is cleaned properly after use.
-
Send the reel to Hatch for professional service if it develops a mechanical or performance issue.
Why We Fish and Recommend Hatch
Hatch is a Yellow Dog favorite and our best-selling fly reel because it delivers the durability, consistency, and versatility destination anglers demand. The Iconic is built around a rigid one-piece frame and reel seat, an integrated drag system with fewer potential water-entry points, and a smooth carbon-filled drag material designed to manage heat during long, powerful runs.
For our team and clients, that combination matters. Hatch reels are equally at home on freshwater rivers, saltwater flats, and demanding big-game trips, making them a dependable choice for anglers who travel across multiple fisheries. Their solid construction, reliable drag performance, and straightforward maintenance inspire confidence when replacement equipment may be far away and opportunities are limited.
We fish and recommend Hatch because the reels have proven themselves across years of hard use in the field on many of our visitations. They are powerful without being complicated, durable enough for demanding travel, and versatile enough to become the reel many anglers reach for trip after trip.
