For the past two years, the Yellow Dog Flyfishing travel team has partnered closely with Patagonia, offering real-world, in-the-field feedback to help refine their newest flats and river wading boot. Our team tested prototypes everywhere from New Zealand to the Seychelles, putting them through the same conditions our traveling anglers face worldwide. The River Salt Wading Boots II are built from the soles up to meet the unique demands of both freshwater and saltwater angling. The boots feature comfortable Vibram® Megagrip anti-slip, non-marking soles for traction on everything from boat decks to slippery rocks. Abrasion-resistant Cordura® nylon mesh uppers are quick-drying, durable, lightweight and can withstand sharp coral and rocks. The high collar and adjustable ankle strap bolster stability and help keep sand out of the boots.

Who are these boots for?
The River Salt Wading Boots II are Patagonia's do-it-all wading boot, built for anglers who don't want to own a separate pair for freshwater and saltwater. Patagonia's own description positions them to handle both -- worn over a stockingfoot wader on a freshwater river, or worn wet with bare feet or a thin sock on a saltwater flat or boat deck.

What is Vibram Megagrip and why does it matter for a boot used in both fresh and saltwater?
Vibram Megagrip is a rubber compound engineered for grip and slip resistance on both wet and dry surfaces. It's nonmarking, so it won't scuff a boat deck, and it performs consistently whether you're stepping from a skiff onto sand or crossing algae-covered river rock -- one sole built to handle both environments rather than a compromise between them.

What's the high-collar design and adjustable ankle strap for?
A high-collar design paired with a stiff upper bolsters ankle protection and stability on uneven ground, while the adjustable ankle strap cinches a snug closure at the top of the boot to help keep sand, pebbles, and sediment from working their way in -- a bigger issue on saltwater flats than in most freshwater conditions.

What is the adjustable lacing system?
A low-profile lacing system reduces lace bulk to help prevent line snags, and a fast-action lace toggle allows quick on/off without re-lacing each time. Laces tuck into a small pocket at the tongue for tidy storage rather than dangling loose.

Why does anticorrosive hardware matter here?
All hardware on the boot -- including shoelaces and toggles -- is anticorrosive and abrasion-resistant. Saltwater is hard on standard metal hardware over time; building corrosion resistance in from the start is part of what makes this a genuine dual-use boot rather than a freshwater boot pressed into saltwater service.

Can I add studs to these boots?
Yes. The Vibram Megagrip sole accepts studs for added bite on slick ice, snow, or heavily algae-covered rock. Studs aren't recommended for boat decks or drift boats, so check with your outfitter or guide before studding up if you'll be spending time on a boat.
