Description

Still the best performance-to-value fly fishing reel series in the industry, Clearwater Large-Arbor Reels have a new addition to the family—the Clearwater II. The die-cast design is protected by a durable powder-coat finish built to withstand hard use. An improved Carbon®-to-stainless, sealed disc drag holds its own with high-performance machined reels. The new Clearwater II fly reel converts easily to either left- or right-hand retrieve. Positive click drag knob delivers consistent settings. Updated radiused reel foot keeps your leader from kinking when wrapped around it.

Features

•    Carbon-to-Stainless Sealed Disc Drag — Improved sealed drag system resists water and debris intrusion for consistent, reliable performance in freshwater and light saltwater environments. Smooth, positive engagement from low settings to high.
•    Fully Cast Frame, Spool & Drag Knob — All components cast from aluminum for uniform construction and durable performance. Die-cast design allows for a large-arbor geometry at an accessible price.
•    Large Arbor Design — Faster line pickup than standard-arbor reels, reduced line memory, and more consistent drag pressure as line pays out during a fight.
•    Powder-Coat Frame Finish — More impact-resistant than standard anodizing. Available in Charcoal and Dark Pine Green for 2025.
•    Updated Radiused Reel Foot — Curved foot fits more securely in reel seats and eliminates leader kinking when the line is wrapped around the foot for storage.
•    Positive Click Drag Knob — Indexed click stops for repeatable, consistent drag settings without hunting for the right position.
•    Tool-Free Left-to-Right Retrieve Conversion — Easy retrieve direction change without disassembly.
•    Spare Spools Available — Individual spare spools sold separately.
•    Three Sizes: II, III & IV — Covering 3–5 wt, 5–7 wt, and 7–9 wt applications.
•    Orvis Unconditional Guarantee — Covers defects in materials and workmanship. Reel cleaning and conditioning also available as an Orvis service.

FAQ

Who is the Orvis Clearwater Cast for?
The Clearwater Cast is the right reel for anyone building their first quality fly fishing outfit, anglers equipping a second or third rod without spending premium reel money, guides outfitting loaner setups, and parents or instructors setting up beginners. It delivers a sealed disc drag, large arbor design, and solid build quality at a price point that makes it genuinely hard to justify spending more until you know exactly what you want from a more expensive reel. It is also an excellent backup reel for traveling anglers who don’t want to risk a $700 reel on a checked bag.

Is the drag on the Clearwater Cast actually sealed?
Yes. The Clearwater Cast features a Carbon-to-stainless sealed disc drag — the drag internals are enclosed against water and debris intrusion. This is a meaningful upgrade over older die-cast reels at this price point where sealed drags were uncommon. The sealed system makes it suitable for light saltwater use in the IV size and reduces maintenance requirements for freshwater anglers who fish in rain or wade deep.

What is a die-cast reel, and how does it compare to a machined reel?
A die-cast reel is made by injecting molten aluminum into a mold under pressure, producing the frame shape in one step. A machined reel is carved from solid bar-stock aluminum using CNC mills. Die-casting allows for more complex shapes at lower cost but typically produces a slightly less precise result and heavier wall sections than machining. In practice at the Clearwater's price point, the die-cast process produces a durable, functional reel that performs well — the drag quality and sealed system are the same whether the frame is cast or machined. The trade-off is weight: die-cast reels are typically heavier per diameter than machined reels of similar size.

Can I use the Clearwater Cast for saltwater fishing?
The IV (7–9 wt) is suitable for light inshore saltwater use — bonefish, redfish, and snook on an 8 or 9 weight rod. The sealed drag resists corrosion, and the powder-coat finish is more durable than standard anodizing for handling saltwater exposure. Thorough rinsing with fresh water after every saltwater session is essential. The Clearwater Cast is not designed for heavy, repeated saltwater use or larger saltwater species — for dedicated saltwater fishing, stepping up to a purpose-built saltwater reel is recommended.

What does the radiused reel foot do, and why does it matter?
The updated radiused (curved) reel foot on the Clearwater Cast has two practical benefits: it fits more securely and evenly in most reel seats, reducing the chance of wobble or slippage on inexpensive reel seats; and it has a rounded leading edge that prevents the leader from kinking when you wrap it around the reel foot for storage between casts or at the end of the day. It’s a small detail that makes a noticeable difference in everyday fishing.

What are the downsides of the Orvis Clearwater Cast?
The Clearwater Cast has several honest limitations to understand before buying. First, as a die-cast reel it is heavier than machined reels of comparable diameter — the III at 6.1 oz is notably heavier than the Ross Animas 5/6 at 4.43 oz or the Galvan Rush Light R-5 LT at 5.2 oz, which can affect rod balance on light freshwater outfits. Second, the drag, while sealed and functional, is not as smooth or refined as the disc drag systems on premium machined reels — it will handle most freshwater trout situations well but lacks the startup inertia performance of higher-end reels. Third, the powder-coat finish, while durable, is susceptible to chipping on hard impacts in a way that anodized aluminum is not. Fourth, the reel is imported, not USA-made. For the price, these are acceptable trade-offs — but anglers who anticipate outgrowing the reel quickly may find it worth investing elsewhere.
