Shilton SR Series Reel

The Shilton SR Series is the latest addition to our already sterling range of reels. The SR range have been designed from the ground up with the saltwater angler in mind, rugged functionality with high grade 6082 T6 aluminium to give you the edge you need in any saltwater scenario. We have increased the overall diameter of the cork drag, resulting in less start-up inertia and more stopping power, as well as adding one extra plunger (from 2 to 3), for extra drag engagement and durability.

One Word: Drag. Shilton Reels undeniably have the best drag of any fly reels because they were designed with one thing in mind – to enable fly anglers to fight and catch the strongest, toughest saltwater and freshwater gamefish in the world.

Shilton Reels’ frames and spools are manufactured using top quality aluminum bar stock and the other components are machined from stainless steel. Polymers, carbon fiber, and cork are used to create the all-important clutch systems that take Shilton Reels’ drag to the next level and make We Stop Fish a reality.

FAQ

Who Is the Shilton SR Series For?
The Shilton SR Series was built for anglers who place drag performance above everything else. Designed specifically for saltwater fishing, the SR combines rugged construction, massive stopping power, and exceptional durability into a reel capable of handling some of the strongest fish on the planet.

From permit, tarpon, and giant trevally to tigerfish, golden dorado, and roosterfish, the SR Series is built for situations where fish routinely test tackle to its limits. Anglers looking for a lightweight reel or a traditional trout reel should probably look elsewhere. The SR was designed with one goal in mind: stopping powerful fish in demanding environments.

What Makes the Shilton SR Drag System Different?
The drag system is the heart of every Shilton reel. The SR Series features an oversized cork drag that was redesigned to provide less startup inertia and increased stopping power compared to previous generations.

Shilton also increased drag engagement by adding a third enclosed one-way plunger, up from two on previous models. The result is greater durability, smoother engagement, and more consistent drag performance under heavy loads.

What Species Is the Shilton SR Best Suited For?
The SR Series excels when targeting powerful gamefish that require substantial drag pressure and durability. Popular applications include tarpon, giant trevally, roosterfish, tigerfish, striped bass, peacock bass, King salmon, and arapaima.

While the SR9 is an excellent option for bonefish and permit, the reel truly shines when connected to larger fish capable of long runs and sustained battles.

What Are the Downsides of the Shilton SR Series?
The biggest potential downside of the SR Series is that it was designed for a very specific purpose. This is not a reel built around minimizing weight, maximizing versatility, or appealing to the broadest range of anglers. Instead, Shilton focused on creating a reel capable of handling the most demanding saltwater and freshwater gamefish on the planet.

As a result, the SR may feel like more reel than necessary for anglers who are just getting started in their saltwater fly fishing journey.

Shilton also prioritizes function more than anything. The SR is built to perform in remote, high-pressure environments where tackle failure is not an option. If your idea of fly fishing involves fish that routinely test backing capacity, drag systems, and angler resolve, that's a tremendous advantage. If not, there are certainly lighter and more specialized reels available.
