Lower Madison River Fishing Reports
Updated May 23, 25

*Flow Data: Madison River below Ennis Lake near McAllister, MT

Flows on the lower have been dropped and fishing has really improved. Still some caddis around but rising fish have been few and far between. Hopefully the cloudy conditions will change that. If you find rising fish, they have been willing to eat dark bodied caddis. A size #14 peacock Elk Hair Caddis is my personal favorite. If they won't take the dry, try swinging an emerger in front of the fish. Nymphing will remain a good option when fish are not looking up. Crawfish, Yellow Sally nymphs, Caddis nymphs, San Juan Worms and scuds and sowbugs are all excellent options. With the high and off-color water conditions streamer fishing with an articulated pattern can be a great option. Peanut Envy's, Sex Dungeons, and Swim Coaches are a few of my favorites.

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
