Pesca Maya Trip Report August 2020

May 03, 23
Just wanted to drop a note to tell you what a fabulous time I had at Pesca Maya Lodge last week. It was a last-minute decision to take the place of my trip to Southern Belize that was canceled due to Belize not reopening on the 15th. Yellow Dog rescheduled my Belize trip for next April, but I needed to get back to the Salt. Shaun Lawson, YD’s Mexico Program Director, got on the phone and was able to give me a few options. We decided on Pesca Maya and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve been working with YD for several years and have been to Belize numerous times and the Bahamas just last Fall. I don’t know what took me so long to visit Ascension Bay, but after 100+ bonefish and a couple permit I won’t wait long to revisit.

My guide for the week was Daurin. I put him right up with the best guides I’ve ever had the opportunity to fish with. He puts forth so much effort and knows the fishery inside and out. I learned so much. What a guide! We were a tarpon short of a Grand Slam 2 days in a row. One of those days, we looked for the last 3 hours of the day for one. We finally found one rolling deep behind mangroves in a tiny space. I was able to make the cast and set the hook. Our problem was that the tarpon was not the 20lb fish we assumed it was. I wasn’t going to be able to just pull him right out of the little opening I cast the fly through. It was a huge tarpon that jumped 3x back inside the mangroves, but high enough above them that we could see the entire thing. It was awesome.

My final “fish” story is catching a bone while wading only to have a barracuda blow it up and take the bone. One problem for the cuda....it took the whole bone and became tight with my fly in the process. I fed the bone a shrimp pattern and then fed the barracuda the bone. The large barracuda jumped several feet out of the water. It spit the bonefish out midair and kept on running. I was still tight....it was epic. Sorry for the long note but I wanted to express my gratitude to everyone at Yellow Dog and Pesca Maya for the lasting memories during such a difficult time. - Jim A.
