Flow Data: Bighorn River near St. Xaiver, MT

Nymphing still remains the most productive option on the Bighorn. However, the trouts preferred fare has started to include PMD nymph imitations more and more everyday. Hopefully within the next week or so we can start to see some healthy PMD hatches and fish willing to crunch PMD's on the surface. Caddis here and there. Both of these hatches will get better and have more fish looking up as we get into July. May be time to start thinking about fishing ants and hoppers if you are interested in cruising a dry fly. Subsurface a Black Micro Mayfly, Pearl/ Olive Jiggy Perdigon, Black Zebra Midge, or Tailwater Sowbug have worked great. Scuds and caddis nymphs are also productive imitations on the Bighorn right now. Streamer fishing has been OK. Sparkle Minnows, Skiddish Smolts, and Swim Coaches have all been productive.

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
