Lower Madison River Fishing Reports
Updated Jul 16, 25

*Flow Data: Madison River below Ennis Lake near McAllister, MT

Hoot Owl Restrictions (No fishing from 2PM to midnight): Warm Springs FAS to confluence with the Jefferson River

The lower is now being pulsed by about 600-1000 cfs daily. This mixed with the warm water temperatures will make it worth fishing elsewhere. However, we may see a few days of good fishing conditions after this cold spell if the water temperatures drop. If you do fish the lower, pay attention to water temperatures and avoid fishing when temperature exceed 67 degrees. Fishing an attractor dry with a dropper will be a good starting place. Caddis, ants, and hoppers may work on top. Caddis nymphs and Perdigons below the surface.

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
