Flow Data: Missouri River below Holter Dam near Wolf Creek, MT

Very warm in Craig this week. About the same as the rest of the state. Terrestrial fishing? I say most likely. Still a bit of dry fly fishing with tricos in the early morning. Get in position early to make the most of the spinner fall. Terrestrials when the fish stop rising to those trico spinners. Prospecting hoppers can be quite fun. Ant behind the hopper can be a good play. Some callibeatis have been hatching. These hatches are pretty localized but can be good fun when you stumble into fish eating these large mayflies. Fishing in the afternoons has slowed significantly. The action picks back up when the sun gets low in the sky and temperatures begin to drop. Nymphing has remained very productive. It does however slow down in the afternoon similar to the dry fly fishing. A drowned trico paired with a midge nymph or small perdigon is a tough nymph rig to beat. Zirdles have been producing fish in the shallows and is a great and fun sub-surface fly to fish. Streamer fishing has slowed. Weeds are around and it will be tough to keep these off your fly. Not terrible compared to previous years.

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
