Yellowstone River Fishing Reports

*Flow Data: Yellowstone River near Livingston, MT

Fishing has been decent but not excellent. Some surface action, a good number of fish (whitefish) eating nymphs, and trout willing to eat the streamer here and there. It is starting to get warm lower on the river so keep an eye on water temperatures. Avoid fishing when water temperatures exceed 67 degrees to avoid putting extra stress on the trout. Caddis and little Yellow Sallies have been flying around. Fish have been looking up a little bit and have been willing to take smaller attractor dry flies, ants, hoppers and caddis patterns. Dry fly action will hopefully improve when the fish really get keyed in on hoppers. Smaller nymphs are catching the trouts attention more than anything. Formerly Known as Prince, Lightning Bugs, Perdigons, and pheasant tails have been finding success regularly. Again, mostly whitefish. Streamer fishing has been OK. Medium bright colored streamers have worked well for me. The Swim Coach, Baby Dragon, and Sparkle Yummy all being great options.

Montana fishing licenses are available for purchase online at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and at Yellow Dog Flyfishing - Fly Shop (some exceptions may apply). If you are planning to fish in the headwaters of the Gallatin River area above Taylor's Fork (approx. 1 mile upstream); be aware that most of this is in Yellowstone National Park which requires a separate fishing license and is seasonally open to fishing according to YNP regulations.
